Taboo subjects thread

There are plenty of taboo subjects/questions out there that I'm sure many are dying to ask but aren't doing so in case of causing offence. (myself included).

I thought a thread here to post such questions or topics which could then be taken up as a new thread by someone could be a good way of starting some new debates.

There seem to be plenty of issues that haven't been discussed in the main sections in the last few months , some could be interesting, some not.

Who wants to get the party going?

If you show me yours, I'll show you mine!:p

Here's some....

Are children abused if they are allowed to watch pornography?

Do you leave your 8-year-old home alone? Or let them walk to school alone?

Condoms given out by staff to students in middle school?

Public executions?

Military drafts?

Non-religious politicians? Or how about non-religious clergy?

What constitutes being registered as a sex offender? Is it fair to have your name registered for the rest of your life?

Designer pet breeding? Right or wrong?

.

.

.

Those are relatively mild. I think some more severe taboo subjects exist but not within the spirit of RF.

the first topic you mentioned sounds fairly taboo.

Could be considered one of the main problems caused by the internet.

Patriotism?
The Flag?
Military honor/"service?"
denying Santa to toddlers?

the current debate on racism in this section is close to your first two topics.

Should nationality be abolished?

actually your 4th topic has given me a new thread idea..............

If I may suggest another taboo subject: If you discover that your teenager is thinking about having sex, do you provide him or her with the means for protected sex (condoms), along with a healthy dose of parental words of caution, advise them to take it slowly, and then hope for the best? Or do you get angry, declare your emphatic disapproval, threaten consequences, and then refuse to discuss it any further? Just asking as the mother of a 13 year old boy.

I say pick the one that means he'll come talk to you if he has problems in the future and not the one that'll make him scared of admitting a mistake to you

Are children abused if they are allowed to watch pornography? it is not good sex education

Do you leave your 8-year-old home alone? Or let them walk to school alone? not unless you want the intense guilt when they go missing

Condoms given out by staff to students in middle school? should be up to the parents, not the teacher

Public executions? don't like them but on the same note we can look away

Military drafts? teachers youth disipline

Non-religious politicians? Or how about non-religious clergy? should not mix

What constitutes being registered as a sex offender? Is it fair to have your name registered for the rest of your life? legally charged with a crime thats what, yes they should be registered for life as more often then not they reoffend

Designer pet breeding? Right or wrong? the animals are beggining to suffer,

Absolutely! It's pernicious.

Why on Earth not?
Condoms given out by staff to students in middle school?
Not without instruction.
Military drafts?
Slavery! What claim does some gang have on my person?
Non-religious politicians? Or how about non-religious clergy?
Should be mandated -- for both.
What constitutes being registered as a sex offender? Is it fair to have your name registered for the rest of your life?
Nope
Designer pet breeding? Right or wrong?
An abomination

Violet.
Things are only taboo if YOU don't want to talk about them,
because you fear some personal - usually irrational/superstitious - consequence
for doing so
or
the people AROUND you don't want you breaching certain subjects-
usually for superstitious/irrational reasons
but always out of some fear,
and don't want YOU talking about them
to the extent that there is some (maybe veiled) threat of 'consequence'
from them
to you, if you do.

At least this is my perception of taboo.

Certain subjects/topics here at RF are "taboo"
in that I would be banned for raising them.
Now WHY would I do that
if I don't want to be banned?

Taboo subjects are usually the ones
that people find SO OFFENSIVE
they will do anything they can
to shut them down outright.

Would you care to give an example?:flirt:

I was asked this by a group of foreign students once - ie: they wanted a working example of a taboo as they didn't quite get the meaning. It was impossible to do.

A dilemma of sorts - look bad by not being able to explain the word or risk looking bad or worse for demonstrating a taboo.

There is probably even a word for this kind of thing - anyone know?

Speaking as a teacher and someone with years of experience in working with children and youths I would definitely not recommend the second option. The first option is more along the lines of what I would do if I were you. Teenage boys have massive amounts of hormones running through their system, and being curious about sex is very much the norm. In fact, I would probably be more worried if he showed no interest at all.
Doing anything that would discourage him from talking with you about it, is definitely a bad idea.

I once held a small lecture for a group of parents about the internet, giving some pointers on how to handle it in relation to their kids and setting reasonable boundaries. And I remember saying at one point; "And for those of you who worry that your kids might come across pornography while using the internet, you can stop worrying right now. I can absolutely guarantee that they will." But the main point I was making was that dialogue and open conversation is the absolutely best way to go about this.

Like with the internet, kids will eventually become interested in sex, and the best you can do is to make sure that when they do, they will still think talking with you about it is still a relevant option.

Taboo subjects? Main one that is coming to mind for me is questioning conventional moral norms.

For example, on what basis - aside from our own anthropocentric bias - do we put such a premium on human lives? Why bother bending over backwards like we do to save and/or prolong human lives? Why have these prohibitions against murder and ritual human sacrifice? Why do we demonize those that liberate themselves from these "moral" standards that pedestalize the value of a human life? Why constantly strive for the betterment of human lives and ignoring the sacrifices made in doing so?
