"Teaching Creationism is Child Abuse"

Evolution is a theory not fact as some of you have misrepresented in this thread.

And a scientific theory isn't a "pull crap out of your ***" theory, as many religious people seem to perpetually believe no matter how many times they are corrected.

Do you not understand what a scientific theory is yet? If not, are you interested in learning and understanding what a scientific theory is?

Scientific theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Extracts from it:

A scientific theory is "a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment."[1][2]

Scientific theories are the most reliable, rigorous, and comprehensive form of scientific knowledge.[3] This is significantly different from the word "theory" in common usage, which implies that something is unproven or speculative.[5]

Yes, they are personal. This thread reminds me of a story that ran on NPR a year back or so about child services abducting Native American children off of reservations under questionable circumstances. They would basically disrespect their cultural traditions and paint them as "abusive" to whittle away at Native communities. *digs* Ah, I found it. They covered the story here. I see this thread, and it reminds me of this story. If we're going to call teaching kids a cultural worldview "abuse," then this is the result when put into tangible action. Lost children, shattered families. I mean, that is the implication, isn't it? If you're abusing your child, he or she should be taken away?

And now I probably really will poof. *chuckles* But I thought of this story, and had to post it up. :D

Excellent post.

Oh well, not everyone is perfect. Or are you just trying to misunderstand or twist my words?
I am merely pointing out that you listed flashbacks as a form of child abuse IF they cause harm but mentioned nothing about if they do not cause harm; yet took the exact opposite approach with creationism.

please be so kind as to explain how that is "twisting your words"...

No, Rick. It is you who is misrepresenting terminology. We have explaned repeatedly what ''scientific theory'' actually means. Scientific theory explains fact. What about the theory of gravity? Is gravity ''just a theory''? The fact is that you're being willfully ignorant just because you can't accept that ancient superstition turned out to be false.

You mean because I don't bow down to the alter of science like many of you do?

Many things turn out to be false like when science told me we where headed for another ice age not so long ago. Who was willfully ignorant then?

Science acts like it has all the answers, but I am still waiting on a cure for cancer or at least show me the missing link.

Why do I not observe evolution? Is it still happening? If I came from apes, why do we still have apes? Should I not see any changes in any species over my life time or at least pictures from earlier periods?

Why no fossil evidence? I guess I should just take science all on faith right? :D

To what extent what parents do with their own children is none of our business?

Personal opinions aside, to the extent that the consent of the governed and the laws created through that process allow for interference. In other words, if there are no legal grounds for claiming abuse, how parents raise their children is none of our business. By and large, American forms of governance do not interfere with how parents raise their children, except in cases of obvious and clear abuse. Violation of personal freedoms and liberties is a no-no in this country. Additionally, I'm fairly sure organizations like the ACLU would call foul on anyone trying to claim that bringing a child up in a religious tradition is "abuse" and that therefore, the child should be taken from their parents. That kind of religious favoritism is a no-no in a secular nation. That's not to say it doesn't happen anyway, but it's not supposed to.

"Oh, you're going to teach your children Bible-based literalistic creationism? Well, we're going to take your kids from you now, because you're abusing them."

That won't fly in this country. The day it does will be the same day we've tossed the Constitution out the window.

Well actually we are apes! We did not evolve from the other modern great apes, just that they are our closest living relatives.

So, in summary, you're fine remaining ignorant, and have no interest in actually learning about science beyond the false assertions and empty arguments that intellectually dishonest religious people continually toss out. Does that about sum it up?

Alters aren't for bowing down.
They're for sacrificing animals, & then BBQing them.

Science is inherently wrong, ie, all theories are conditional, & tend to be replaced with better ones. But science has the
feature that it is useful for explaining & exploiting things in the material world. It is definitely not about absolute truth.

Science acts like it has all the answers....
That's not "science".
That's the pompous self-righteous bozos who misunderstand what science is all about.

.....but I am still waiting on a cure for cancer or at least show me the missing link.
There will never be "a cure" for cancer. But there will be many better & better treatments (& perhaps some cures) as we progress.
There will always be "missing links" in the fossil record, since fossilization & discovery of fossils are both rare events compared to
the volume of critters who existed over eons. All these things comport with the scientific method, which isn't perfect.

Why do I not observe evolution?
You're not a microbiologist or epidemiologist. Electricians (like landlords) don't watch tiny tiny bugs who are evolving.
Although....in pest control (insects), I do need to apply chemicals in a fashion which doesn't cause them to evolve
resistance to what I use.

Is it still happening?
Yes. Moreover, it's impossible to prevent it. (It's a stochastic system response kind of thing.)

If I came from apes, why do we still have apes?
The apes we descended from are long gone. Modern apes are descended from earlier guys.
We exist simultaneously because we filled different environmental niches.

Should I not see any changes in any species over my life time or at least pictures from earlier periods?
That would depend upon many things: reproduction rate, population size, environmental pressures, our ability to observe.
I speculate that we might see polar bears evolve measurably in the next century if polar ice recedes greatly. But I ain't
no expert, so don't pay me no never mind.

Why no fossil evidence? I guess I should just take science all on faith right? :D
Lots'o fossil evidence. But how one reads it & interprets it can vary.

School should be for the basics and optional other courses, why there is even 'mandatory ' classes on evolution or otherwise is beyond me, there is already too much spreading out of topics.

You honestly don't believe science should be taught in public schools? Really?

Well actually we are apes! We did not evolve from the other modern great apes, just that they are our closest living relatives.

Incredible, isn't it, how casually some folks can reject enormous bodies of empirical evidence they very obviously don't understand the first thing about. What about the Missing link! Why are there still apes! Evolution is just a theory!

Jesus wept.

I agree with the video that we have to do a better job. I vote we start lobbying the government to also impose "teaching the controversy" about creationism in Sunday schools, religious schools and homeschooling curricula.

I just asked a bunch of questions, geeze. :sorry1:
