But if you think this is bad take a look at the following:

"This high school girl's revealing clothing got her in trouble over dress code violation"

No poll, but what do you think about this last issue?

I know you uncivilised Americans don't have uniform because it shows your great freedom and liberty, but here in Britain uniform and dress code is quite normal. :p

Though with bras specifically I never heard rules about that when I was in school. I don't think anyone would really notice, unless the lack of bra was obvious and revealing.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
In a young hormonal generation its probably not a bad thing to maintain a degree of modesty in a learning institution.

Bras are actually bad for women, so it's best not to wear them. They are uncomfortable, itchy, give you red marks, sometimes rashes and never fit as it is common for one breast to be larger than the other. I don't think wearing a bra implies modesty, but then again I don't see breasts as particularly sexual. I go braless often and no-one gives a crap.

I voted <depends>.
Schools can have reasonable dress codes.

Note:
That doesn't mean she should wear Depends.

Whether breasts are sexually exciting or not seems to be a function of culture, rather than nature. Adolescents in Amazon tribes see breasts all day long without, apparently, thinking of them as especially sexual. The argument that adolescent boys in the US cannot see breasts unfettered by bras without losing their minds strikes me as infantalizing the boys. It reduces them to passive fools who are not expected to take any responsibility for their own feelings. That's a hell of a message to be sending them when they're on the cusp of becoming adults.

But seriously, bras are uncomfortable. Like chill schools, chill. Our schools have Uniforms and the second story is ridiculous even if you include that as a thing. My school had two uniforms. Formal and sports. Formal for a girl was a blouse, skirt and black shoes. Which I hated so I pretended to have Dance or PE during the week to wear a collared polo shirt and shorts. And funnily enough both uniforms showed off one's collarbone anyway. Like geez where does that kid go to school? The Victorian Era ladies academy?

Have you met an adolescent boy? :p

But isn't that attitude up your conservative christian alley? ;)
No. What I mean is that Americans seem afraid even to discuss sex. They frequently use euphemisms and such too. They find any hint of nudity horrific. Here in Europe we just seem more relaxed about sex in a general way.

This is ridiculous. Excessive cleavage I can kind of understand, and I voted for the third option because it's probably best to have rules against tight shirts with no bras, I don't really think school is the best place for showing off your nipples, but collar bone?! What the hell?! This is just about as stupid as it gets.

Hi Folks..

YES - schools should force such a dress code....From the male perspective - can you remember what it is like to be 15..??.. Raging hormones and sex drive in top gear ALWAYS constantly....Having girls revealing nipples in that manner is not a good idea at all if the aim is to be a focused student there to learn...lol....

And from the girls perspective - surely she must KNOW the outcomes..?...MUST notice that guys NOTICE HER..?..And if she does realise this - WHY is she choosing to do it..?..Clearly she seeks the attention FROM the guys I believe - at least it was always that way when I was at school....Nipples ARE sexual to the male mind and there is no escaping that fact of life - and ladies you just cant get away from it...Put them on display by going braless IS A sexual invitation as you ARE displaying yourself to those guys AS a sexual creature - and if you KNOW that is what you are doing - then what can I say..??..

Sometimes - guidance is necassary - a dress code in such a situation is a definate requirement to my mind....But thta second example - lol - man they took political correctness way way too far...collar bones - not sexual - nipples - very sexual ;)

Perhaps, but that isn't the question.
It’s the more honest and realistic response to the actual issue. The OP piece actually quotes the school saying their rules don’t specifically refer to bras and there’s no further details about exactly what basis the girl’s clothing was deemed inappropriate.

The real question here is whether schools should have dress codes and if so, how they can be best structured to be effective, fair, reasonable and practical. There’s also the all too common (but oft-ignored) questions here about how private disputes like this are brought to the public attention and reported by the media.

In the video the principal's office is turned into a prison complete with steel bars. The implication is that clothes are prisons from which the students should be freed.
