Even in the 1940s, audiences enjoyed men in drag. Like the film "Some Like it Hot", or in the 1950s, Bugs Bunny often was depicted in drag. In the 1970s, we had Klinger from the MASH TV show. Now all of the sudden Republicans are acting like the American Taliban. I could think of more examples of drag in film and TV, but this will have to do for now.
The difference between then and today, is back then everyone knew your favorite TV programs and movies were mostly make believe and not real. It was like a play on a stage. It may be funny, suspenseful, heart warming and entertaining. It allowed one to escape reality for a few hours, laugh and then back to work and reality. There was clean separation.
As an analogy, early Western movies had gun fights and barroom brawls. However, there was no blood and gore, even when the actors were shot or thrown through a window. Even a clueless audience of children, would assume this was acting and entertainment. Now the push for movies and TV is for special affects, attempting to turn acting and fantasy, into something that appears to be real and more than just entertainment.
Now many more things are less about entertainment, and more about some blend of entertainment and marketing; sports is infected. This infection can confuse young people. The TV show become more like a commercial and less like a TV show that is light and fun. There is too much selling bad fish, as fresh, as the Left turned Hollywood into Madison Avenue.
How many programs still allow one to make fun of delicate Lefty agenda, without Lefty censorship? Why is comedy, censored by the Left? What should be seen as entertainment, has detoured down the road of marketing. Balanced spoofing the issues of today would be fun entertainment, for the vast majority of the people. But it is not good for marketing purposes. It can neutralize a jingle. The new jingle works better, if you can avoid comedy and censor anything that counters the illusion.
I have no problem with any free expression within entertainment; we award prizes for good acting. I would first restore the full rights of all comedy and allow all people to poke fun at all Lefty and Righty marketing schemes, so we can undermine all marketing special effects in entertainment. What still stands, is world of entertainment and not the alternate reality of marketing.
The left has no problem censoring marketing for gas powered cars. This is helps sell Green products. Letting both appear on TV would better reflect reality; based on current reality. But it will not allow green monopolies via lopsided data, which now makes it easier to sell bad fish.
We cannot sell cigarettes and even show them in movies of TV; beyond retro, since even a modern cameo appearance by a smoker who looks legitimate, is felt to be marketing, and misleading to a captive audience. The Left knows what can happen but then tries to take advantage of this marketing cameo upside, while censoring other marketing doing the same.
Good for Tennessee! When social marketing moves back to fantasy and entertainment, and does not become a vehicle for social engineering scams for money and power, they may change it back. Maybe we can add some new laws that allow one to sue the programers and parent companies, if their intellectual marketing products causes harm to minors, like cigarettes for the soul. They have deep pockets and lawyers will be looking for ways to get it.
I like the very early pic of "drag racing", since this is funny and puts things into a fun entertainment perspective. It may not be good for marketing, which is why it is effective. If we laugh or cry together, barriers can come down.
