Beyond that it is persona preference and my preferences is to not cut it at all.... and since that was not a choice I did not vote

Having worked as a chef I can explain.

The different cuts depend on the plating, what the toast is accompanying and how much room is on the plate.

A more chefy answer would be that #1 is used for dipping or combing with the entree such as eggs.

#2 is the cut used for most sandwiches and #3 is your all purpose cut.

I've ate out a lot in my lifetime. It was always cut diagonally regardless from toast, blt, etc..
I asked why on several occasions.
The answers were..
-it makes it look bigger
-if better for dipping
-if its hot it cools faster
-it exposes more of the inside making it look like more is inside
-corners give a good starting place

And last but not least
-it looks better
-

There are many reasons.

I was trained to cut for presentation though.

Toast, in more complicated dishes should show off the entree.

Here is an example of the difference it can make.

Cutting diagonally also creates the illusion of having less crust.

"If your bread is square, and if each side is 4 inches long, you have 16 inches of crust. Cut that bread down the middle, and you get 8 inches of crust-free surface. Cut that same bread diagonally, you end up with almost 11 inches of crustless surface"

Despite all facts pointing to the contrary, eating a piece of bread cut diagonally simply feels bigger than a piece of bread cut as 2 or 3.
