I would like to know why people are even debating the age of the earth with the op? Do you honestly think you are going to change his mind or something? People who actually believe the earth is 6,000 or 13,000 years old, obviously have some sort of problem with their heads - why waste your time trying to win an argument that is impossible to win?

FFH you need to come to work with me one day, for your own sake this nonsense is really tiresome. I've tried to explain to you in about 5 threads how rediculous this theory is.

Im assuming you know what topsoil is? Why are houses never built on topsoil? Why do houses require footings? Because the soil is too young to support them. Now how long does it take for organic matter to break down in topsoil? 100 years? Soil and top soil are produced naturally at a rate of 1mm in 200-400 years, averaging at about 1 ton/ha/y. A full soil profile develops in 2,000 - 10,000 years, a period which is long for humans but short for the planet. Now 10,000 years for about 1 foot (depends where you live) of soil, wow. So soil on the earth is only about 36cm deep. LOL:D

The OP is a little too literalistic for me. Is anyone familiar with the work of Joseph Campbell? Some of his Power of Myth episodes are on google video.

"A decisive, enormous leap out of the confines of all local histories and landscapes occurred in Mesopotamia in the fourth millennium b.c., during the period of the rise of the ziggurats, those storied temple towers, symbolic of the Axis Mundi, which are caricatured in the Bible as the Tower of Babel. The leap was from geography to cosmos, beyond the moon, whereupon the primal, limited, and limiting tribal manner of thought (which the Hebrew prophets chose deliberately to retain) was by the Gentile nations left behind. That was the period when writing was invented; also mathematical measurement, and the wheel. The priestly watchers of the night skies at that time were the first in the world to recognize that there is mathematical regularity in the celestial passages of the seven visible spheres - the sun, the moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn - along the heaven-way of the Zodiac.

And with that, the idea dawned of a cosmic order, mathematically discoverable, which it should be the function of a governing priesthood to translate from its heavenly revelation into an order of civilized human life. The idea of the hieratic city-state made its appearance at that time, with kings and queens symbolically attired, enacting together with their courts an aristocratic mime in imitation of the celestial display, the king crowned as the moon or the sun, his queen and the other members of their court as planetary presences.

And when the celestial signs appeared that were interpreted as marking the end of an eon, the kings and queens, together with their courts, were ceremoniously buried alive. Sir James G. Frazer, in The Golden Bough (12 volumes, 1907-1915), published evidence from many parts of the world of the practice of such rites. Buried courts have been unearthed from Sumer and Egypt to China.

Some notion of the whole profoundly conceived, macro-microcosmic import of such courtly mimes may be gained from a consideration of the mathematics of the mythological and actual cycles of the calendars to which such rites were attached. For example, in the Hindu sacred epics and Puranas (popular tellings of ancient lore) the number of years reckoned to the present cycle of time, the so called Kali Yuga, is 432,000; the number reckoned in the "great cycle" (mahayuga) within which this yuga falls being 4,320,000.

But then reading one day in the Icelandic Eddas, I discovered that in Othin's (Wotan's) warrior hall, Valhöll, there were 540 doors, through each of which, on the "Day of the Wolf" (that is to say, at the end of the present cycle of time), there would pass 800 divine warriors to engage the antigods in a battle of mutual annihilation. 800 X 540 = 432,000. And so I asked myself how it might ever have come to pass that in tenth-to-thirteenth century Iceland the same number of years were reckoned to the present cycle of time as in India.

In Babylon, I then recalled, there had been a Chaldean priest, Berossos, who, c. 280 b.c., had rendered into Greek an account of the history and mythology of Babylonia, wherein it was told that between the time of the rise of the first city, Kish, and the coming of the Babylonian mythological flood (from which that of the Bible was taken), there elapsed 432,000 years, during which antediluvian era, ten kings reigned. Very long lives! Longer even than Methuselah's (Genesis 5:27), which had been of only 969.

So I turned to the Old Testament (Genesis 5) and counting the number of antediluvian patriarchs, Adam to Noah, discovered, of course, that there were ten. How many years? Adam was 130 years old when he begat Seth, who was 105 when he begat Enosh, and so on, to Noah, who was 600 years old when the flood came: to a grand total, from the first day of Adam's creation to the last drop of rain of Noah's flood, of 1,656 years. Any relation to 432,000? Julius Oppert, a distinguished Jewish Assyriologist of the last century, in 1877 presented before the Royal Society for Sciences in Göttingen a paper on "Dates in Genesis," in which it was shown that in 1,656 years there are 86,400 seven-day weeks. 86,400 / 2 = 43,200.

And so it appears that in the Book of Genesis there are two contrary theologies represented in relation to the Deluge. One is the old tribal, popular tale of a willful, personal creator-god, who saw that "the wickedness of man was great in the earth...and was sorry that he had made man on the earth...and it grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, 'I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the ground, man and beast and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them' " (Genesis 6:5-7).

The other idea, which is fundamentally contrast, is that of the disguised number, 86,400, which is a deeply hidden reference to the Gentile, Sumero-Babylonian, mathematical cosmology of the ever-revolving cycles of impersonal time, with whole universes and their populations coming into being, flowering for a season of 43,200 (432,000 or 4,320,000) years, dissolving back into the cosmic mother-sea to rest for an equal spell of years before returning, and so again, again, and again.

The Jews, it will be remembered, were for fifty years exiled from their capitol to Babylon (586-539 b.c), when the were subject, willy nilly, to Babylonian influences, so that although the popular, exoteric version of their Deluge legend is from the period of David's kingdom, tenth century or so b.c., the exquisitely secreted indication of a priestly knowledge, beyond that, of a larger, cyclic version of the legend - where the god himself would have come into being and gone out of being with the universe of which he was the lord - is post-Exilic, as are, also, the genealogical datings of Genesis chapter 5, which are so very nicely contrived to join the 600 years of Noah's age at the time of the flood to furnish a total of exactly 1,656."

[...]

"540 X 800 = 432,000, which in the Hindu Puranas, or "Chronicles of Ancient Lore," is the number of years reconned to the kali Yuga, the present cycle of time, which is to be the last and shortest of four cycles that together compose a "Great Cycle" or Mahayuga of 4,320,000 years, which is to end in a universal flood. By what coincidence can this number have appeared in both in India and in Iceland in association with a mythology of recurrent cycles of time? For as told further in the Eddas,

Now do I see the earth anew
Rise all green from the waves again;
The cataracts fall, and the eagle flies,
And fish he catches beneath the cliffs.

In wondrous beauty once again
Shall the golden tables stand mid the grass,
Which the gods owned in days of old.

The fields unsowed bear ripened fruit,
All ills grow better, and Baldr comes back;
Baldr and Hoth dwell in Hropt's battle-hall,
And the mighty gods.

One cannot help but think of the prophesied Day of Doom of the New Testament (Mark 13), which, according to Rev. 21:1, is to be followed by "a new heaven and a new earth; for the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more." Can the number 432 have been associated with the Biblical cycle as well as with the Hindu cycle and the Norse? We read further in the book of the revelation beheld on the Greek island of Patmos by St. John:

(Rev. 21: 9-21)

12,000 X 12,000 X 12,0000 stadia = 1,728 billion cubic stadia, which, when divided by 4, equals 432 billion. Moreover, in Rev. 13: 18, it is declared that the number of the name of the "beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems upon its horns and a blasphemous name upon its heads" (Rev. 13:1), is 666; whereas 6 X 6 X 6 = 216, which is half of 432.

The earliest known appearance of this number was in the writings of a Chaldean priest of the god Marduk, Berossos, who, c. 280 b.c., composed in Greek a synopsis of Babylonian myth and history in which it was reported that, between the legendary date of the mythological flood, ten kings ruled in Sumer through a period of 432,000 years. The universal flood there reported in the same as that of Genesis 6-7, of which the earliest known account has been found on a very greatly damaged cuniform tablet from the ruins of Nippur, of a date c. 2000 b.c. There the ancient tale is told of a pious king Ziusudra, last of the line of ten long-lived antediluvian monarchs of the city of Shuruppak, who, while standing by a wall, heard a voice advising him to build himself an ark."

The pattern is clear.
6 days/6,000 years the Lord labored to create this earth and everything in it.
1 day/1,000 years the Lord rested from all his labors.

6 days/6,000 years man has labored on this earth, since the fall of Adam and Eve.
1 day/1.000 years we will rest from our labors when Christ returns to renew this earth and set up his kingdom.

Book of Moses (Genesis chapters 1-13 restored)

Moses 2: 1 (compare to Genesis 1:1 King James version)

And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto Moses, saying: Behold, I reveal unto you concerning this heaven, and this earth; write the words which I speak. I am the Beginning and the End, the Almighty God; by mine Only Begotten I created these things; yea, in the beginning I created the heaven, and the earth upon which thou standest.

Yeh! Hey what school you bin to mate. Did they also teach you that the earth is flat and is the centre of the Cosmos and that any research into the workings of the universal being is an act of heresy which would bring into disrepute the infallible teachings of the church of some two thosand years ago?

Each creative day is a period of universal activity, or the Great day of manifestation, which the Hindues call 'Manvantara, which is preceded, and also followed, by a period of universal inactivity, which to our finite minds appears as an eternity, and is call ' Pralaya.'

I honestly don't know why this thread is still ongoing. I just logged in and wow...Here it is. I thought it was over and FFH realized the error of his ways with this ridiculous theory. Mind you this is a theory that isn't shared by scientist. We've thrown all these different dating methods at him and basically told we are wrong by him and all that he can come up with to try and refute it is a book that, in itself, is FULL of incorrect sciences......(insects with 4 legs)

Gen 1:16 (God made two lights. The greater for the day and the lesser for the night)
Job 38:4-7 (The earth is flat)...????? WHAT!!!

Look, these are just a couple of examples but the problem here is that a lot of people use this book as if it were a history book, a book of science and a book of math and it clearly is none of these things. That is nonsense and it's hard to take seriously what they say.

Now that you mention it, there was a meteorite which struck the earth and eliminated most of humankind. The crater was found to contain abnormal amounts of a variety of lead and iron isotopes.

So by using lead/lead dating, they were able to approximate that the crater was between 20,000 and 40,000 years old. Only a couple of thousand humans lived through the whole experience, too. Fittingly, this crater has been called Canyon-Diablo....

There's some information about Canyon-Diablo...

And I think you might find this to be interesting. ^_^

Gen 1:16 (God made two lights. The greater for the day and the lesser for the night)
Job 38:4-7 (The earth is flat)...????? WHAT!!!

Some lawyers are trying to have the value for Pi changed to 3 because of this quotation from Kings....

1 Ki 7:23 NIV He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it.

I think what some people don't realise is that the Bible is the inspired word of God. It wasn't written directly by him. As such, everything has to be read with regard to the cultural context in which each text was written.

I mean, Leviticus 25:45 says that we're all entitled to have slaves as long as we treat them fairly. Such a thing was only intended to tell the people of the time to treat others with dignity; because slaves were being mistreated. It wasn't necessarily advocating slavery. And in today's world, we know that slavery is wrong.

So maybe in Genesis where it says that God created the world in seven days, metaphor was being employed to allude that time really has no meaning for God. Who knows? Maybe it was a story that has just underwent too much verbal retelling that it eventually became a myth before it was written down. That doesn't mean that there's no truth to it, just implied truths. But one thing's for sure, it wasn't meant to be taken literally.

Oh goodie! Can I go? Yay!

(For ease of reading, the title of each article that I respond to is a link to the article I am rebuting. Aren't I nice? And as this is such a long post, I shall be dividing it up into several parts.)

Response to "Coal: Evidence for a Young Earth"

The claim that radiohalos indicate that coal can form quickly is negated simply by the fact that rapid coal formation does not equate to a young earth. No explanation is given to explain why rapid formation of coal is impossible on an old earth. Also, just because coal can be formed quickly in laboratory conditions is no indication about the possibility of the rapid formation of coal in nature. There are many things that can happen in the lab and yet are impossible or highly unlikely in nature. It is also highly suspicious that the creationists claim that the radiodating techniques are accurate when dealing with evidence to support their claim, yet the same claims are flawed when dealing with evidence which contradicts their claim. For more information on how the radiohalos do not indicate a young earth, please see THIS LINK.

Response to "EVIDENCE FOR CREATION"

I shall deal with these in point form.
  1. The claim that we don't have a single complete example of the fossil record does not indicate that the whole thing is made up. We are able to identify similar places in two different locations and use the similar parts to piece them together. For example, if we have one section of a group of numbers 173467321 and another section 7321476327 and a third group 632789777 and we know they are part of the same sequence, we can identify the similar groupings and use those to connect them. We can see that the 7321 at the end of the first sequence matches the beginning of the second, and the 6327 at the end of the second matches the beginning of the third. Thus, we can connect them together - 17346732147632789777 - and the connecting pieces are underlined. The first point then goes on to say that there is a lack of transitional fossils. This simply is not true. THIS page responds to the claims of a lack of transitional forms, and THIS page cites many examples of such transtionals. The final issue raised in the first point is that there are many polystrate fossils - fossils which extend from one geologic layer to another. This is not a problem; indeed it is bound to happen - do you really think that the skeleton of a brachiosaur is going to remain confined to a strata three feet thick?
  2. The second point claims that the decay of the earth's magnetic field indicates it can only be a few thousand years old. This is true - but it blatently ignores the well documented evidence which shows that the earth's magnetic field undergoes reversals every few thousand years. They are just figuring out the period since the last such reversal.
  3. The idea of a global flood is laughable. There's no explanation of where the water came from, no indication where it all went. It is never explained how koalas got all the way from Australia to the middle east to board the ark, nor how they returned afterwards. Also, no explanation is given as to how fish life survived - most fish can live only in salt water OR fresh water, not both. There was no way to survive the sudden mixing of salt and fresh water. It would have been too salty for freshwater species, and not salty enough for saltwater species. And no explanation is given as to how PLANT LIFE survived. Submersion for such a length of time is fatal to any plant, yet Noah is never mentioned as taking pine trees aboard the ark, nor rose bushes or wattle trees. The claim that a global flood could provide the geological record we have seen is also not true, as there are surface features visible in different layers such as oils, mud cracks, evaporite deposits, footprints, raindrop impressions, meteor craters, worm burrows, wind-blown sediments, stream channels, and many others. These features are unable to occur underwater.
  4. The fourth point is assuming that population growth is constant. It is not. Also, if those calculations are true, then there would only be a few thousand people alive at the time when Moses is said to have lead more than HALF A MILLION people out of Egypt. See HERE for more information.
  5. The fifth point is once again talking about radiohalos. I'll provide THIS again.
  6. The sixth point claims that there is evidence of human artifacts throughout the geological column. One such example is a hammer in Cretacious rocks, shown to be incorrect by THIS page. Another example is a sandal print in Cambrian rock, shown to be incorrect by THIS page.
  7. The seventh point claims that there is not enough helium in our atmosphere to account for an old earth. THIS webpage explains why this claim is not true.
  8. The eigth point makes a claim about time dilation in distant parts of the universe indicating a young universe. Observations from the periods of Cepheid variable stars, from orbital rates of binary stars, from supernova extinction rates, from light frequencies, etc. indicate that such time dilation is minor. Also, Humphires based his calculations on earth rocks, thus the billions of years before the formation of the Earth are unaccoutned for in his model. See HERE for more information.
  9. The ninth point claims that the complexity of living systems indicates design. However, this is not true. Complexity can be found in many non-designed yet dynamic systems, such as weather. see HERE for more information.
  10. The final point in this article claims that the Human brain is designed. This is not actually a tenth point, more a specific example of the ninth, so the same rebuttal applies here as well. See THIS page for more.
I shall continue in the next post.

Thank you for this response, Tiberius. It is so tedious to fight the nonsense of creationism because they use a tactic that in debate is called a "spread". They throw SO many arguments and SO much data at you that it is a lot of reading and work to show why every single one is false. Thanks for having the passion and knowledge to respond to the wealth of disinformation out there.

FFH.........have you seen Inherit the Wind? You really, really should if you haven't. Here's a lil clip!
I've already seen it.

I'm not a religious fanatic, with no sense of reality, who believes the earth is 6,000 years old, which I've also clearly shown is a false theory, througout this thread.

Most Christians are not so ridiculously removed from reality as this charachter is so ridiculously and insanely portrayed.

I could write a script portraying Spencer Tracey's beliefs as equally insane.

And so I asked myself how it might ever have come to pass that in tenth-to-thirteenth century Iceland the same number of years were reckoned to the present cycle of time as in India...."

Great quote, Student, just wanted to focus on this part for the moment, though. It occurred to me that the number 540 is perhaps connected to the cycles of Venus, as it takes about 540 days for Venus to complete its phases. This may be a "mystical" number, known only to the initiated.

Still no one has shown me a picture of a ridioisotope halo older than these: Evidence for Creation

These radioisotope halos have all been found imbedded in granite...

RADIOISOTOPE ~~~~ HALF LIFE
Polonium-214 ~~~~~~~ 164 microseconds
Polonium-218 ~~~~~~~ 3.05 minutes
Radon-222 ~~~~~~~~~~ 3.8 days
Polonium-210 ~~~~~~~ 138 days

These have not...

RADIOISOTOPE ~~~~ HALF LIFE
Radium-226 ~~~~~~~~~1,600 years
Thorium-230 ~~~~~~~~ 80,000 years
Uranium-234 ~~~~~~~~ 250,000 years
Uranium-238 ~~~~~~~~ 4,500,000,000 years

LOL:D
The earth has an average of 6 to 9 inches of topsoil.

1inch of topsoil takes, at the most, 1000 years to accumulate.

The math is easy enough...

6,000 to 9,000 years of topsoil definitely fits within the creation time frame of 13, 000 years.

So where is the millions or billions of years of topsoil ??????
