The Kindness Box

They say that words are sharper than swords. It only takes a few simple words to lift someone up, but it also takes a few words to ruin someone’s life. In short, our words can make or break someone.

That’s why we must aspire to speak words of kindness to anyone we meet, every single day.

Kind words help us deepen our connections with one another. It encourages respect and plants seeds of empathy. It also promotes a peaceful resolution to any conflict and can rebuild broken relationships.

But what you may not realize is that speaking words of kindness not only makes the other person feel loved and appreciated. It also makes us, the speaker, feel good. When we choose to say kind words, even to the people who’ve hurt us, we’re choosing to free ourselves from all the hate, anger, and resentment. It’s a liberating feeling unlike any other.

If you want to start speaking with kindness starting today, here are some of the most powerful words of kindness you can say to someone:

"When you’re helping, from your limited vantage point, appreciate that person’s struggles and suffering yet also respect their privacy and boundaries. Ascertain with delicacy and care the extent to which your friend may wish to open up and talk. Don’t take responsibility for solving that friend’s life; just be there. Let any feelings of compassion and selflessness come naturally. Watch your feelings so that, if you feel superior or prideful, you can shush your mind and tell it that it should feel grateful for the opportunity to serve. For, in serving by doing what you can to alleviate suffering, you are transcending boundaries and glorifying the One Power in us all. As you give your life to others, compassion grows; and as compassion grows, you become worthier to receive grace. Grace is what enables you to grow in your divinity and what helps you gain your true life."

Kindness is the act or the state of being kind, being marked by good and charitable behavior, pleasant disposition, and concern for others. It is known as a virtue, and recognized as a value in many cultures and religions (see ethics in religion).

Kindness is a type of behavior marked by acts of generosity, consideration, or concern for others, without expecting praise or reward. Kindness was one of the main topics in the Bible. In Book II of “Rhetoric“, Aristotle defines kindness as “helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself, but for that of the person helped”. Nietzsche considered kindness and love to be the “most curative herbs and agents in human intercourse”. Kindness is considered to be one of the Knightly Virtues. In Meher Baba‘s teachings, God is synonymous with kindness: “God is so kind that it is impossible to imagine His unbounded kindness!”

“It’s really just a publicity thing,” says Michael Zervos, a man who’s currently on course to set the Guinness World Record for the fewest number of days needed to visit every country in the world.

But as he told me, that’s just to bring eyes onto his real mission: to hear the happiest moments from the lives of people in every country in the world and to share them on social media, to help remind us we are all connected, if not by parentage, then by aspirations.

Quotes about making a difference - for example -

Most of us want to make a difference – to not just live, but to live with a purpose. But making a difference usually entails sacrifices. Unfortunately, few are willing to give up the relative comfort of their safe zones for the sake of making the world a better place.

As we make our way into the world, we tend to become so wrapped up in all our concerns. We forget that others have their own struggles too. Or that we can do something to ease their sufferings, even if we are having a tough time ourselves.

Truth is, we can all make a difference. No matter how small or how insignificant your effort may seem, it can make an impact. Just like how a small drop of water can cause ripples, you too can effect change. Small actions like giving a sandwich to a homeless man or even just being there can make a world of difference for that person. Now, imagine if all of us will do that for each other.
