We've (I've) been brushing our dogs teeth once a week with a very expensive toothpaste. The result is that her teeth are pretty clean - no expensive vet cleaning required so far.

The vet gave me a sample of some stuff you mix with water and squirt on their teeth with a syringe. I'll give it a try but I don't see her putting up with it.
