"The Mosque at Ground Zero"

Autodidact

Intentionally Blank
I'm not addressing legal rights here. I'm talking about common sense bridge building.
O.K., how about if a bunch of Muslims use their money to build a swimming pool and open it to the entire neighborhood to use. How does that sound? Oh wait, that's what they're trying to do.

Good point. We keep calling it a "mosque", because that is part of the propaganda campaign that started off this entire tempest. In reality, it is a community center--closer to an Islamic version of the YMCA. There may be a place of worship for Muslims in it, but so what? There already is a working mosque nearby that has been around for decades. There are many Muslims who live and work in that area.

Masjid Manhattan is not, nor does it look like they want to be affiliated with the Cordoba House. They don't want the limelight and are happy where they are and how they practice.

Depends Upon My Mood..
I understand the principle of the matter..the "emotional side" ..It was Muslim radicals that terroized our entire country and in almost an instance they murdered 3,000 people..regular people. right in front of our eyes..we the country..(of America no matter what your religion or lack their of) was horrified..Its not like a little pipe bomb or blowing up an abortion clinic..those people TERRORIZED us and paralyzed us for days ..I live near DFW ..the silence was deafening..All of it is permieated in my brain as one of the most memorable days of my life and thereafter..

Thereafter???I dont kow why the Muslim religion couldnt understand how offenesive it would be to build a religious house that was of the religion thats caused that much pain and fright right on the grounds..

Then again I dont know why others cant see that very same action =as a sign of peace.. that is not who they are..

Maybe its too soon..But from my heart..I believe its a peaceful thing and should be treated as so..Its time to let down our defenses a lillte..and thats despite the fact they have the legal right to do so..

And to my understanding..Muslims died in the 9-11 day too..NOt the terrosist but in the buildings ..and some of them were fire firefithers too ..

I think we have to let it "go"..Thats only my personal opinon..

I dont understand the rhyme or reason to want to build there..But thats none of my business. It could be a great thing to do..And I'll understand in good time..

Hiya, Dallas, FYI the community centre is not "on the grounds" - it's blocks away in an extremely dense urban environment - there must be hundreds of buildings in a 3 block radius from the WTC. It's not even visible from the grounds. If you want my theory as to what they must have been thinking, it's "hey, let's build a community centre with a swimming pool! Look, here's a property that's for sale!" I doubt the possibility of their project being used by Republicans to fan anti-Islamic hysteria in an election year even crossed their minds. Is politics the first thing YOU think about when you're shopping for a property?

Sweetie, you can hardly be blamed when everybody and their dog who has access to a TV camera, a computer or a microphone is calling it the "mosque at ground zero". Never mind that it's not a mosque (it's an inter-faith swimming pool and conference centre) and not at ground zero (it's several blocks away). Conceding these points isn't going to get any Tea Party candidates elected, so the facts haven't featured prominently in the coverage.

Well it's a testament to your kind and charitable spirit that you could still consider the Muslim builders' point of view to some extent even when you thought that was the case. :D

Where has “common sense” gone? We as a country shouldn’t even be debating this issue
Agreed. This should not even be a debatable issue. Any religious group, including Islamic, has the right to build a community center that meets zoning standards and violates no existing laws.

I always find it hilarious when people use a supposedly numerological significant date like
the 12/21/2012 date in your link. Especially since the Gregorian Calender you are basing this on was not in use until 1582, and does not take into consideration the 10 days lost on the Julian Calender due to miscalculations of the Earths Orbit.

But back to the subject at hand.
What do you personally think of the Islamic Community Center planned in Manhattan?

The Muslim community must take into account the feelings 0f the 9/11 families who would prefer the the Mosque be built further away from ground zero. When was the last time the left cared about freedom of religion?

I’ll tell ya what. If I had to pick an organization that I would consider pure evil, it without a shadow of a doubt would be the ACLU.NAMBLA alone seals the deal , pro pedophile.Anti American soldiers rights, but pro terrorist rights. I don’t wish harm on anyone, but if every ACLU attorney disappeared off the face of the earth, I wouldn’t lose a wink of sleep.America, and our young children would be allot safer.

If your talking about the 2000 Curley v. NAMBLA case, you need to get your facts straight. The Curley's sued NAMBLA (an organization I despise) for wrongful death because their child was killed by a violent pedophile and NAMBLA advocates 'Man Boy Love' in their literature.
The ACLU took this case based on the First Amendment Right to Free Speech. Even unpopular or what I consider despicable speech.
The ACLU has explicitly stated "the ACLU does not advocate sexual relationships between adults and children, we do advocate robust freedom of speech. This lawsuit struck at the heart of the First Amendment. It is easy to defend freedom of speech when the message is something people find reasonable. The defense of freedom of speech is most critical when the message is one most people reject."

Do you have a problem with the tenets of the First Amendment? Freedom of Religion? Freedom of Speech? Freedom of the Press? Freedom to Peaceably Assemble? Freedom to Petition?

Like I said before, it seems you would be happy to burn all copies of the US Constitution and rid our country of Democracy in favor of a Christian (as you interpret it) Theocracy.

Yeah, the ACLU is one of the most important organizations in this country. They literally do nothing but protect rights. Because the people whose rights are threatened are generally unpopular this makes the ACLU easy to hate. But whoever told you they like pedophiles and terrorists was full of excrement.

Well perhaps some Atheists can blow up the Burj Dubai and see how Muslims feel when a building dedicated to Atheism is built there. :D
