Race wasn't that much of an issue in this election. Obama won overwhelmingly, decisively. That had to do with a lot of things, but not much with race.

I would say that race wasn't much of an issue against Obama, but it certainly was an issue for Obama. This is a significant moment in Black American History, and the black vote significantly contributed to his election.

If somebody did vote for Obama because he was black, they are not going own up to it, in fact they may not even know that is the reason why they did it.....

....It is really good to see a black president though and much better to see a non-neo con party in power. But as I said earlier I am not convinced that it is going to make a substantial difference. It remains to be seen really.
I'm sure for some this was purely a race issue, but many including myself voted for him because was an intelligent well spoken man, and a democrat that wants to improve our international relations and focus on the economy. I hear allot of people whining about taxes being raised but if you look his tax plan you'll see that people who make les than $250k are going to see little to no increase
Chicago Sun-Times said:
Obama says he would hike several taxes on people making more than $250,000, including the amount they pay on capital gains. Currently, the top income tax rate is 35 percent. Under Obama, that would go back up to 39 percent. Obama's staff told the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center he would raise the rates for people in the top two brackets -- about 2.5 million filers out of 100 million-plus. People in those high tax brackets would see the tax rate on their capital gains hiked from the current 15 percent to 20-28 percent.

Obama started his campaign saying his plans would not increase taxes for people earning less than $250,000. But he found himself in an apparent contradiction by saying he would tax all income to fund Social Security, not just income up to $102,000, as is now the case. So now, Obama's plan calls for no Social Security tax on income between $102,000 and $250,000, but all income above $250,000 would be taxed for Social Security.

The 95 percent-plus of the American population that earns less than $250,000 would see the following tax breaks: A $500-per-worker tax credit for people who earn less than $150,000 and do not itemize, and a $4,000 credit per child in college. Seniors who earn less than $50,000 would pay no income tax.
The people who are going to get screwed are companies making windfall profits. I don't feel all to great about either party having control of D.C. but I think in the beginning we'll see changes come allot quicker, plus there's so much Democratic in-fighting that I don't think it'll be as bad as when the Conservatives had their rubber stamp.
Yes. Americans are not the only ones celebrating his victory. This has already helped our foreign relations and he hasn't even done anything yet! And I am so happy to have a President that will be able to speak to us on a regular basis with some intelligence and eloquence instead of hiding out at a ranch somewhere keeping us in the dark.

Refreshing indeed, I'm glad to have someone running the country that I can at least respect and so far be proud of. He really is an inspiration to the many, considering how little he had and what he came from to be where he is today.

Yes, the Black vote significantly contributed to Obama's victory. But I doubt that most of the Blacks who voted for Obama did so simply because he is Black. The youth turned out in historic numbers too, but do you think most of the youth voted for him simply because he was younger than his opponent?

I agree, i think most people like him PURELY because he is black. WHy vote for a candidate just for the sake of it?

let me just say that I feel VERY fortunate to have witnessed this HISTORIC election. Almost 160 years after the fall of slavery, and almost 70 years after the fall of the Nazis, slavery and racism are finally ending in America. It will take Obama 4 years, maybe 8 years of hard work to roll back the ill effects of discrimination and hate, but we are finally getting there. And to think that he has been so gracious with regards to Israel....

Obama is the brilliant, shining sun of hope in a world which is now overcast by hate, bigotry and confusion. Without Obama and without the Democratic victory in this election, there wouldn't be any hope for a new America. that's for sure. From now on, we can continue to take steps towards a purely egalitarian society, in which all men and women are equal. We can finally end injustice and the hoarding of money by that 1% of the population, and spread it to the other 99%.
YES WE CAN!
- YES WE DID!

Just as I know millions of women didnt vote for McCain to get a first time female VP...I do not believe for one second that the majority voted for Obama to get a first time black president..Im sure some did..But I do not think it does him justice for people to accuse him of being voted in simply because he is black..That certaintly is thrilling..But its because a real opportunity was there..His being black is like the icing on the cake..(with a cherry on top)..IMHO....

It's like Chris Rock said - people wouldn't vote for Flavor Flave just because he's black...

You know.... the original version of the speech had "Angellous is my Daddy" and Obama replaced it ad-lib with "yes we can."

Obama's Victory Speech

What a speech! I found myself chanting "Yes, we can!" with the crowd, and the story of the 106 year old voter nearly made me cry.

EDIT: Whoops, wrong speech. Fixed it.

I sure hope they never forget them, actually.

Thats exactly what I was thinking..Maybe they wont have independent recall..But they should always be reminded the way it "used to be"..

Just like in Obama's speech last night..He highlighted a 106 year old black womans "memories" of times gone by...

Wouldnt it be fasicnatign to sit down and chat with that lady???..I know it is for me to talk with my 94 year old grandmother...She's a hoot...
