The ONLY religious question!

Because God made it so you have to seek the truth. Even without a god that would be how it works. The truth doesn't come to you, you don't accidentally find it. You have to seek the truth. It can be found it your honest with yourself, open to all ideas and patient.

If we are supposed to seek out the truth, why do so many so-called "believers" refuse to do so?

Why do so many so-called "believers" just "believe"?

Why are so many so-called "believers" afraid to be honest about what they believe and not always do what they say they are doing?

Why do so many so-called "believers" investigate pretty much every part of their life before they actually perform the action for those events, but never do so with religion?

There are just too many holes in religion. This also shows the gullibility of humans and how they prefer to let emotions control their lives.

Sorry, had to post this, after having just had a rant in another thread...

To everyone who has a religious belief that the hold to be "the Truth," or "the only way to salvation," I want to ask this one simple question:

What the hell do you think you know that everybody else doesn't? How can you be so blindly stupid as to imagine for yourself a God that could make his truth known to you -- but was utterly powerless to make it known to everybody else?

I believe the concept is that one would not put a gun in the hands of a child. God has found me trustworthy so He has no problem speaking to me. I would not speak to you because you are unbelieving and bellligerent.
So you are saying that you DO have privileged access to the mind and thoughts of God? Access that God deliberately denies to others (in fact, the vast majority of all others)?

Great News, I have your answer! The Bible is clear to point out that when we start to learn we are like infants taking in only milk. As our study and searching continues, we are than fed with the bead and the meat of the Word. The truths in the Bible are available to ANYONE who searches diligently for them, with an open mind. There are many tools that will help with those who search. It states in the Bible that if you search for Me with your whole heart, you will find Me. The Holy Spirit is a wonderful tutor that can and will help also.

Apparently, it's a bit harder than that. Millions upon millions of people have been trying that for 2000 years, and the result has been war, death, torture -- and more religions that it's easy to count!

Barrett's 1,699 page "World Christian Encyclopedia," published by Oxford University Press in 1991 edition (first edition was 1982)which took a decade to compile, identifies 10,000 distinct religions, of which 150 have 1 million or more followers. Within Christianity, he counts 33,820 denominations.

Those 33,820 all, presumably, read something like the same Bible.

I think it's just hope. Hope that there will be something after people die and prophets have arisen that continue this hope. For sure there is magic and miracle in the Cosmos, though for many years it has been dormant it awakened with human beings. I think these are just schizophrenic hallucinations that had a trend. It is interesting when you consider me because I am an actual manifestation of these hallucinogenic trends. But yeah, you have to keep living and have these in the back of your mind. Best to live your life first and then live for your god, maybe.

For many the subjective truth of story has been mistaken as the provable objective truth of science. Spiritual truth is often metaphoric of more concrete truths and as such teaches us of the possibilities latent in our mundane, sometimes painful experience of the world.

Sacred stories are like movies...we go into them to be entertained, to be moved, to be reminded of what is important. We come out into the indifferent world and quickly we loose that feeling we just paid good money for (especially if we got the popcorn and drink). We remember, we dream, we hope. It gets us through the harder parts of life.

There is a power in story telling that comes with an equal responsibility. The story-tellers must be sincere and honest. They must speak truth. They must be open and reflective. For they craft our stories and weave into the known the unknown in a way that affects us deeply and emotionally. This power can be used to great evil as well as great good.

If all the world's stories were suddenly taken away I have no doubt each and everyone of us would sorely miss it. We all live inside some story we tell ourselves about our value, our truth and our meaning. Without those stories we would wither even surrounded by all the objective truths the world has ever known.

Many of the sacred stories of old need to be rewritten, updated or replaced. These stories often came from a vital, creative oral tradition and when written down were given the veneer of history. The original story tellers knew better.

One of my personal callings is to speak up for the need to renew our sense of the sacred as an inspired collaboration between a person and his or her sense of the divine. The age and rigidity of a story are counter arguments to the truth of the spirit. Today's movie makers and authors are in a far better position to speak to our souls than many of our ancient spiritual texts left without clarification or interpretation from a land, a time and an experience long, long ago.

I believe there are many people willing to follow someone who claims to hear from God but often those people are also easily duped into following the false ones like Jim Jones and Sun Moon.

Ah yes! But the question remains - how can you POSSIBLY determine who actually God has spoken to?

I believe I should thank you for having such a low opinion of me. But are you sure which side of the looking glass you are on?

I've tried my best to define god in the most logical, scientific way and only arrived at the ways that I described in my previous posts in this thread.

Otherwise, I'm yet to see any logical explanation to the OP than the one I've offered.

If you can provide one, I'll applaud you.

Not literally one person. One group of persons were taught by Jehovah God in the beginning. After the rebellion against God's Laws as given to Adam and Eve, God made a Covenant with the descendants of Jacob
(later renamed Israel by God),
which Moses mediated. It is known as the "Law Covenant" or "the Mosaic Law" most commonly today. You can find out about that in the first five books of the Bible. At that time they were given a set of laws by which they were separate from the rest of the humans living on earth. They were the group that at that time,

(not forever, but for a time and a season, until they broke the covenant by unrepentant disobedience to God and rejecting the Son of God whom God sent to them)

who were set apart by God as 'His' chosen peoples.
Much has changed since them, but the premise remains--those who are taught by God and obey His laws receive His guidance and are His holy spirit allowing discernment and understanding of things not perceived by others. John 16:13; 4:24
Bible 'truths' are not understood by all people. and those to whom accurate understanding is given, all speak in agreement. Having no divisions among them, in all nations, tribes and tongues. Matthew 28:19-20. Such ones united obey the commands of Jesus, and Matthew 24:13-14 tells us how long that will continue. see John 17:17

There can be some pure truth, unfortunately we cannot know exactly what it is and it lies somewhere independent of any of us,

What good is truth if no one can't access it?

so there is no one person's "truth" especially if it violates the law of non-contradiction by differing from another person's "truth."

A definition of "truth" - a fact or belief that is accepted as true.

Truth ends up as nothing more than what a person accepts as truth. Or as you claim, a factual reality that is beyond anybody's ability to experience. Both ideas of truth are pretty much useless. No reason to waste time searching for it.

This was not a rhetorical question, by the way.
Yes, I'm familiar -- as well as being familiar with the fact that it is substantially disputed.

The dispute notwithstanding, however, until you deign to tell me how you think it might apply to what I've written, I'm not going to be bothered trying to read your mind and respond. That's generally pretty much of a fool's errand (which is usually the objective when people ask that sort of open-ended question). If you have a specific question about my thinking, I'm happy to respond.
