What's a lower and higher self? Can't it just be the self?

It's hard to explain. I generally see lower self people, well the least higher self people, sitting there and ignoring the facts right in front of them. I'm not sure anyone achieves 100% higher self, but they can get closer to it and closer to I think what the world needs, by not being a shipwreck that drags everyone down with them.

I think New Age people call this a full Awakening and whatnot, except they believe they've actually achieved some 100 percent higher self.

Rumi puts it this way using "intelligence" to point to the lower and higher self:

There are two kinds of intelligence: one acquired,
as a child in school memorizes facts and concepts
from books and from what the teacher says,
collecting information from the traditional sciences
as well as from the new sciences.

With such intelligence you rise in the world.
You get ranked ahead or behind others
in regard to your competence in retaining
information. You stroll with this intelligence
in and out of fields of knowledge, getting always more
marks on your preserving tablets.

There is another kind of tablet,
one already completed and preserved inside you.
A spring overflowing its springbox. A freshness
in the center of the chest. This other intelligence
does not turn yellow or stagnate. It's fluid,
and it doesn't move from outside to inside
through the conduits of plumbing-learning.

This second knowing is a fountainhead
from within you, moving out.

I still stand convinced it's just the self. Sex, for example, some would say that's lower, some would say it's higher. Anger can have constructive results or destructive results. Even love and compassion for others can be our destruction if we neglect our self.

I don't understand how "non conformists" can be considered as such when there are a million others who look exactly alike? To the point one of those super conforming "non-conforming" hipsters got angry and tried to sue the authors of an MIT article about it for using his image without his knowledge or consent. Except the dummy wasn't the guy in the photo. Don't they know you can't "non-conform" if your clothes come from chain stores and box stores?
And why is it only dress? Why do we not consider attitudes and mentalities when it comes to non-conforming? After all, it wasn't just home made clothes and unusual clothing that had people in Indiana labeling me as "non-mainstream."

I was going to finish out my "makeover", dyeing my hair etc. But then you know the rest - I have to get something to replace my Pi board, and I don't actually want to go with the same product despite respecting them as a company, especially respecting them given the fact that from what I've heard, they're not-for-profit.
