Scientists have demonstrated how to structure light such that its polarization behaves like a collective of spins in a ferromagnet forming half-skyrmions (also known as merons). To achieve this, the light was trapped in a thin liquid crystal layer between two nearly perfect mirrors. Skyrmions, in general, are found, e.g., as elementary excitations of magnetization in a two-dimensional ferromagnet but do not naturally appear in electromagnetic (light) fields.

This deck system uses an angled beam that attaches to the concrete patio below for support. The very edge of the deck is beginning to dip down, causing a lot of tension where the beam meets the patio. If you look closely, you can see the concrete lifting with the beam. No partying on this deck for a while!

I'm guessing many of those are in California or some other area prone to earthquakes, not that we don't have structural nightmares here. Looked at one house where the bathroom floor.....was not there...looked right into the basement.....

Anywhere houses are built on hills can have these gems. CA has its share of hills and houses that are not worth a hill of beans.
