How dns-search on Ubuntu is set up depends on how it was installed. It's either a config file under /etc/NetworkManager or /etc/netplan. How you update it under NetworkManager depends on whether or not you have a GUI or need to do it from the shell. If you do it at the shell level, you can edit the file directly if you are very careful or use nmcli which prevents stupid mistakes.
