I truly wonder how Teslas are so popular, especially with the way those cars are designed to make money. It's like paying for a cheeseburger then being told you have to pay extra for the condiments and bun and the cheese and meat.
A friend who took me for a ride in his Tesla, including
self-driving mode, is a big fan of the car. They aren't
worth the cost to me, but they are to many for their
performance, operating costs, cameras, & perhaps more.

Ugly, overpriced, poor performing self driving (and why does it exist?) and you can get the costs and such with other electric vehicles.

Poor performing?
His car was zippy, handled well, & even drove
itself about as well as a human could. So I can
understand why people buy these spendy things.
They're certainly better values than other toys, eg,
Ferraris, Lambos.

France is so culturally barren that their
orchestras must perform music from
Ameristanian cartoons. Good choice though.

Hey, how did they get Rand Paul on the
oboe, & Patton Oswalt as conductor?
What a strange country.

If they're that good why is the company getting sued for the wrecks the self-driving feature gets into?

Because many drivers are idiots.
I'm sure you've noticed it.
For example...
As I recall, the steering wheel can sense when one
has let go of it. But people use weights to fool it.
Then it's off to dreamland.
But this doesn't mean the car is a bad product
for other (saner) drivers.

It's an established record of Tesla.
There are multiple lawsuits because the self driving isn't as good as claimed. Collisions with stationary objects in an urban setting make up a lot of wrecks and problems. It doesn't help Musk consistently overhyped and oversold how well the feature actually works and how complete it really is.
Where other companies test self driving on closed courses and have licensed safety drivers do the testing on public roads, Telsa let anyone with enough money beta test them on open roads with no letting the public having any awareness or knowledge of it going on around them. Tesla has also been slow and reluctant to add safety measures like steering wheel pressure and eye monitoring. Other companies just added them. It took years of Musk getting *****ed at before he gave in.
And then there is the contract that requires the vehicle to be serviced by authorized/approved mechanics, and their are consequences for breaching this contract (it is a contractual agreement, after all).

Missing the point.

The car still has value for the majority of drivers
who don't mis-use the self driving feature.
And yes, it's designed to make money. It would
be foolish if they designed it to lose money.
