One thing I hate about America is how it always tears down the old to build new.
My wife has a problem with "old" buildings here.... and she would with your house too..... she is use to things being old close to, or in the, thousands of years old catagory...My house would have troubles over in the US, it's nearly as old as the country.

She was surprised when I was showing her pictures from Europe with things even she would call old.... Rome was one of themMe too, i love exploring ancient Roman ruins. Much of my childhood was spent playing roman soldiers and "helping" the archaeologists dig in the mud in the the ruins of the roman fort found on dads farm.

We of course visited the Duomo. And when we were in the Pazzi Chapel, singers with us heard the resonance in the building and started singing - divine.Absolutely.
While there take in a concert at Fiesole Roman amphitheatre. (Only a few minutes drive)
The best hint i have about Florence is the statue of David in the Piazza della Signoria is a copy, the original is in the Accademia Gallery. Not a lot of people realise that
Ironically, they named it NEW England.....Much of New England doesn't though, that is why that was so surprising....
