The Sin of Pornography

If a young person's first introduction to sex is via porn, then that person could very well confuse such fantastical acts for attainable ones.
Exactly what sex acts do you consider so fantastical that an inability to engage in them would be problematic?

Um, I think you misunderstood me?

I was saying that if a young person sees something depicted in porn, and porn has been his or her only source of sexual knowledge, he or she could think such fantastic acts are possible. You basically suggested than an inability to separate fantasy from reality is more the person watching it's fault that the porn; I am saying that, since young people are impressionable, it wouldn't be unusual for them to think something they saw depictied in porn, something that is not possible in reality, could happen.

Yeah probably. Young people need parental guidance, and its reasonable to protect them from seeing porn by accident.

In another thread Trends in Pornography Viewing it was mentioned that porn is a terrible sin. So I'm curious as to what you think.

Is watching porn a sin? If so, why?

How about acting in porn, professional or amateur?

.
Basically lusting outside of marriage is a sin. If you can watch porn without lusting I think your ok. I think religions tend to demonize things that people like, like eating and sleeping and pro-creation. One of those needs people like to curb for various reasons, but religious people aren't supposed to have physical need or something.

Lusting outside of marriage is relatively bad if you are leading a spotless life full of good works. If you are a couch potato then it hardly matters. You have bigger problems than porn in that case.

ted bundy said the turning point in his life that lead him on his path was his addiction to porn.
"Levi Daniel Staver Allegedly Stabs Grandmother Connie Johnston, Blames Archangel Michael
Police in Richland Township, Pa. say a 26-year-old man killed his grandmother while she ate breakfast, then claimed the Archangel Michael told him to do it.
Connie Johnston, 76, was eating breakfast with her husband, the Rev. David Johnston, on Tuesday morning when her grandson, Levi Daniel Staver allegedly came up behind her and fatallystabbed her in the back with a black Bowie knife, according to KDKA-TV.
Authorities say Staver, who lived at the home, later told them he was sitting at the computer in his bedroom when the Archangel Michael directed him to “kill the witch,” Pine-Richland Patch reported."

Whether it's a sin or not, I don't care in the slightest.
If it isn't, great. If it is, oh well.
Watching porn certainly can't be more detrimental to you than alcohol and cigarettes.

How about acting in porn, professional or amateur?

What people want to do with themselves is their business, not mine or anyone else's.
If they want to get naked with someone else and sell the video, that's on them.

If they get into the business of porn and it harms their body or they get used, that's their issue.
Porn will always be a demand, and there will always be people willing to supply it.

Sin doesn't exist, so no.
As for whether porn is harmful to the viewer, the science on that seems to be inconclusive in many respects. But the porn industry is notorious on the whole for treating actors -- and especially actresses -- badly. I think that needs to be reformed.
Yup, and rather than address those issues--issues that actually do matter and make a difference--the "Moral Right" would rather just ban it and make things worse.

Exactly what is wrong with one's god-given desire to lust?

lust
noun
1[mass noun] Strong sexual desire: ‘he knew that his lust for her had returned’

[in singular] A passionate desire for something: ‘a lust for power’

verb
[NO OBJECT]
1 Have strong sexual desire for someone:
‘he really lusted after me in those days’

1.1 Have a strong desire for something:
‘pregnant women lusting for pickles and ice cream’

Sin is something that separates you from God. I don't see how porn distances you from God. It's just people having sex.

Ted Bundy was a psychopath and there's no such thing as addiction to porn. He just didn't want to take responsibility for his own evil, which is a trait of psychopaths. It's always someone or something else's fault, in their view.

he was asked in an interview if there was a single event early on that turned him from normal to abnormal. he said it started with porn mags when he was a young teen and by the time he was in his young 20s he was into the porn/rape/death films.
if i was making it up as i went i would have said i was implanted by the CIA.

He changed his story a number of times. He bs'd interviewers a lot. He never took any responsibility for his crimes and never felt any guilt over them. Mental health and forensics experts know better, though, and so Anti-Social Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder are the best diagnoses for him.

Wikipedia defines pornography as: "...the portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual arousal. Pornography may be presented in a variety of media, including books, magazines, postcards, photographs, sculpture, drawing, painting, animation, sound recording, film, video, and video games."

So it is in a sense an "industry" that caters to people who are desiring to be aroused sexually. Connected with that there is I believe an exploitation of young people .... Children are also at risk of being exploited by pedophiles. In some countries exploitation of children is well documented.

Again per wikipedia:

Dolf Zillmann asserts that extensive viewing of pornographic material produces many sociological effects which he characterizes as unfavorable, including a decreased respect for long-term, monogamous relationships, and an attenuated desire for procreation.[24] He claims that pornography can "potentially undermine the traditional values that favor marriage, family, and children" and that it depicts sexuality in a way which is not connected to "emotional attachment, of kindness, of caring, and especially not of continuance of the relationship, as such continuance would translate into responsibilities"[25]

Additionally, some researchers claim that pornography causes unequivocal harm to society by increasing rates of sexual assault,[24][26] a line of research which has been critiqued in "The effects of Pornography: An International Perspective" on external validity grounds,[27] while others claim there is a correlation between pornography and a decrease of sex crimes.[28][29][30]

Sadly in the US we have a pornography industry:

  • Approximately one in four video and DVD rentals in the U.S. are adult or pornographic. Some 11,000 hardcore adult videos are made per year, not including the burgeoning market in homemade productions using ever more available and inexpensive video cameras. Even huge corporations are getting into this profitable enterprise, as conglomerates like GM, AOL/Time Warner, AT&T, Marriott, Hilton, and Westin jockey for a piece of the adult video distribution and pay-per-view porno business thriving in hotels and other similar venues.
  • More than 100,000 adult web sites are available on the internet. Profit estimates for online porn range from $50 million to$2 billion per year. Revenues from the purchase of sexual images and encounters online are typically neck-in-neck with non-adult online purchases.
  • Live sexual fantasy and interaction has not, however, gone out of style. It is widely estimated that there are 2,500 to 5,000 strip clubs operating from coast-to-coast in the U.S., and that average profits range from $500,000 to $5 million per year per business.
  • Although reliable figures are hard or impossible to come by, various estimates put profits from adult-oriented businesses at approximately $10 billion annually which, according to ABC News, makes the commercial sex industry bigger than the NFL, NBA, and major league baseball combined (Porn Profits: Corporate America's Secret).
Sex Industry

It's time we support more ethical values in society and outlaw pornography.
