The sun was made to "stand still"/"stopped" from setting? What???

As a Christian, I have a lot of respect for the Bible, but over time, I had to change my view that every part of it is correct and from God.

One of the things in the Bible that God could not have told someone to write, unless He was playing a practical joke on humanity, is the tenth chapter of the Book of Joshua.

In particular, concerning a certain battle, when Joshua allegedly asked Him to keep the sun up in the air, and not allow it to move.

Joshua 10:12-14
12 At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel,

“Sun, stand still at Gibeon,
and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.

Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day. 14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for the Lord fought for Israel.

The sun "stopped" and "did not hurry to set"? What???

The sun does not move around the earth. When it "sets", it is due to the earth moving, not the sun.

Each morning, the sun rises in the east, makes its slow journey across the sky, and then sets in the west. Then it continues a journey around the other side of the Earth, and rises again the next morning. This is how it looks from here on Earth, and that’s what ancient people thought was happening, but that view is totally wrong.

The truth is that the Earth is orbiting the Sun. It’s the Sun that’s motionless, and the Earth that’s moving around it. From our vantage point, it looks like the Sun is going around the Earth, because it’s actually the Earth that’s turning. The Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours, so that the Sun returns to the same position in the sky every day.

Why Does the Sun Rise in the East (and Set in the West)?

Interestingly, Muhammad somehow got wind of this story, and changed it up quite a bit.

One thing that he didn't change, was that the sun allegedly was also "stopped" from setting.

Volume 4, Book 53, Number 353:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "A prophet amongst the prophets carried out a holy military expedition, so he said to his followers, 'Anyone who has married a woman and wants to consummate the marriage, and has not done so yet, should not accompany me; nor should a man who has built a house but has not completed its roof; nor a man who has sheep or shecamels and is waiting for the birth of their young ones.' So, the prophet carried out the expedition and when he reached that town at the time or nearly at the time of the 'Asr prayer, he said to the sun, 'O sun! You are under Allah's Order and I am under Allah's Order O Allah! Stop it (i.e. the sun) from setting.' It was stopped till Allah made him victorious.

Then he collected the booty and the fire came to burn it, but it did not burn it. He said (to his men), 'Some of you have stolen something from the booty. So one man from every tribe should give me a pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me.' (They did so and) the hand of a man got stuck over the hand of their prophet. Then that prophet said (to the man), 'The theft has been committed by your people. So all the persons of your tribe should give me the pledge of allegiance by shaking hands with me.' The hands of two or three men got stuck over the hand of their prophet and he said, "You have committed the theft.' Then they brought a head of gold like the head of a cow and put it there, and the fire came and consumed the booty. The Prophet added: Then Allah saw our weakness and disability, so he made booty legal for us."

In other words, a certain prophet was fighting a battle and he noticed the sun was setting. After addressing the sun, he asked God to stop it from setting, and God allegedly "stopped it" until the victory was won.

If anything, God would have "stopped" not the sun, but the earth, to delay sunset. The sun is motionless, and wasn't doing anything that needed "stopping".

I don't believe God inspired the author of the Book of Joshua as he was writing that part of the book, and I don't believe He told Muhammad that He "stopped" the sun, to delay sunset.

Curious what others think.

Hebrew word shemesh [ daylight ] so, Joshua 10 vs 12,13 could be read as daylight stood still. Or, in other words, God could easily have the sunlight reflected as long as necessary.

2nd Chronicles 32 v 31 is in connection to Joshua 10. Ambassadors of the princes of Babylon sent someone to inquire about that sun standing still episode.

Nope - same thing. We turn, and go around the sun.

How would you have described the sun not moving from the sky to an ancient Israelite? Personally, I would have said the same thing. God stopped the sun

You're thinking about this too much, imo. The bible wasn't just written for us, It was written for a people who lived long before us, A people who didn't even know that bleeding someone would just make them worse, Let alone how the Solar system worked.

The ancient Israelites did Not practice bleeding.
If God stopped the sun the whole earth would have been effected.
There would have been No need to send anyone there - 2nd Chronicles 32 v 31 - to inquire about that battles' sunlight.

The point here is that the sun, or sunlight, or reflected light, cannot stop and stand still, because we are turning.

PS. Bleeding, and leaching people, is again being done today, because they have recognized how this helped people.

About Post# 1 and post # 10 only

== In the post #1, there is some mention of Islamic source. In this regard, I have mentioned general philosophy of such matters according to Ahmadiyya Muslims.

== To us, bible is not its original condition, main example is introduction of trinity idea.

== Hadith (saying of Holy Prophet pbuh, were collected later. Unchanged source is Holy Quran as Allah exclusively promised.....Next in importance is the Practice of Holy Prophet, then comes Hadith. Quran is the judge over rest of two. Hadith explains things but is not supreme over Quran.

As a further example:

Holy Quran
[75:9] And the moon is eclipsed,
[75:10] And the sun and the moon are brought together,

Second verse seems impossible. But these are prophesies about latter days.

Saying of the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa):

For our Mahdi (Divine Reformer) there are two signs which have never appeared before since the creation of the heavens and the earth, namely the moon will be eclipsed on the first night in Ramazan (i.e. on the first of the nights on which a lunar eclipse can occur) and the sun will be eclipsed in its middle (i.e. on the middle day of the days on which a solar eclipse can occur), and these signs have not appeared since God created the heavens and the earth.

Ref: Dare Qutani Vol 1, page 188, Narrated by Hazrat Imam Baqar Muhammad bin Ali ra

(Brackets are explanations.)

The prophesied eclipses occured over asia including, India on the specified dates of Ramadhan. The lunar eclipse occurred after sunset on March 21st, 1894 (13th Ramadhan 1311 H) and the solar eclipse occurred on the morning of Friday April 6th, 1894 (28th Ramadhan).

After southern hemisphere [India 1894] this phenomenon took over northern hemisphere [USA in 1895].

This is one of those stories that says to me: Yup.. This is a fairytale book.
For the 'sun to stand still', we would need a suddent deceleration in the Earth's spinning motion. This would spell absolute disaster and the Earth's ecosystems would shatter.

There are reports that an Indian king in India saw this split too.
Which king in India witnessed this split?

Did you know that during the seventh century, India was one of the places where people studied astronomy?
Brahmagupta was a famous Indian mathematician and astronomer who wrote about events in the sky and headed an observation centre.
Brahmagupta Facts, information, pictures | Encyclopedia.com articles about Brahmagupta
Astronomy in Ancient India - Crystalinks

Another astronomer at that time was Stephanus of Alexandria, a Byzantine scholar who was making observations from Constantinople.
Stephanus of Alexandria Facts, information, pictures | Encyclopedia.com articles about Stephanus of Alexandria

Interestingly, nothing was written by either of these two men about such an event.

There is also no physical evidence of the moon ever being split... consider the fact that there is evidence on our planet of things that took place even millions of years ago, yet there is no physical evidence whatsoever of the alleged splitting of an entire planet... something that happened less than 1500 years ago?

Evidence of the moon having been split in two | Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute

8- These miracles do not disturb any natural law, made by God the Exalted. They just support Man of God who single handed stands against the evils of time.
How would the earth ceasing to rotate not disturb natural law?

9- Such miracles also clearly proves existence of God.
Miracles do prove God's existence, but only when they actually happen.

God did not make the sun "stop" from going down. If anything was stopped it was the earth, from rotating.

Also, the lack of either physical evidence or observations by astronomers of the time also seems to cast into doubt the allegation that the moon split.

10- Narrations by people can be incompletely recorded.
Correct. It is also possible that people can make mistakes in their narrations, and either exaggerate or make things up.

I agree with you that it is important to be respectful.

DawudTalut

Peace be upon you.
The same to you, my friend.

Agreed.

Agreed on all points.

Why would it matter? They would hopefully get educated by having these things explained to them by people of the present.

These are great examples.

Which king in India witnessed this split?

Did you know that during the seventh century, India was one of the places where people studied astronomy?
Brahmagupta was a famous Indian mathematician and astronomer who wrote about events in the sky and headed an observation centre.

Another astronomer at that time was Stephanus of Alexandria, a Byzantine scholar who was making observations from Constantinople.

How would the earth ceasing to rotate not disturb natural law?

Miracles do prove God's existence, but only when they actually happen.

God did not make the sun "stop" from going down. If anything was stopped it was the earth, from rotating.

Also, the lack of either physical evidence or observations by astronomers of the time also seems to cast into doubt the allegation that the moon split.

Correct. It is also possible that people can make mistakes in their narrations, and either exaggerate or make things up.

1-If you search "india king split moon" you will get some information about Indian king.

2- As I said in #10 that
" ....7- Sometimes miracles are shown in such a way that certain small or large people feel sort of hypnotism under the divine decree for some moments, or longer time, or time is felt stopped, or passing faster, or coincidence takes place etc.....

8- These miracles do not disturb any natural law, made by God the Exalted. They just support Man of God who single handed stands against the evils of time."

Please see the both together, that is how natural laws like earth's motions etc are not disturbed.

Sometimes perceptions are put a special state by the God without physically changing anything, sometimes news are given before the actual event happens, there are many ways.

For example, once first Ahmadiyya Khalifah was giving lecture to students. A student went into a state of seeing vision, in which he was presented very delicious food. When he satiated, vision ended.....The smiling Khalifah asked the student, 'has he finished?'......Thus this was a spiritual experience, two people were shown it, rest of the class did not know.

By the grace of Allah the Exalted, worldwide Ahmadiyya Muslims continue to see such happening in their lives. Many from all over the world has joined the Community by such spiritual experiences which help in their lives and understanding. These experiences fill the hearts with certainty that alive God exists.

Holy Quran has, at many places, asks believers to study natural physical phenomenon and points that this all canvas is coloured by Allah the Exalted.

Peace be to all. This is a very good question and Islam encourages us to inquire.

We have to remember that science is taking baby steps and is still in its infancy. There are many mysteries in the universe to be unlocked by science yet. However, the Creator of the universe has informed us of many of these mysteries thousands of years ago! As a Muslim I have no doubts about my book or the teachings of my Prophet (peace be upon him). 80% of the scientific facts mentioned in the Quran are proved to be 100% scientifically accurate and the accuracy of the remaining 20% of them remains unknown until science makes more discoveries.

Coming back to you question, we can't fully understand this phenomenon because we don't have enough scientific knowledge. Maybe God the Almighty stopped the sun by stopping the whole solar system including our earth. Think about what would have happened if he had stopped the earth only. Scientists recently discovered that if the earth suddenly stops from spinning, the immediate effect would be devastating. Consider what happens in a dead-stop car crash. The car stops but everything that’s not tied down inside keeps moving forward, hence the necessity of seatbelts. That would be the scenario if the earth suddenly stopped rotating. The oceans would be ripped from their beds and encircle the earth in a worldwide mile high wall of water, and everything else not firmly attached would be stripped from the surface by winds way beyond hurricane strength. The stress to earth’s crust would create massive earthquakes and ignite worldwide volcanic activity. It would have been the end of the earth as we know it. source: What happens if the sun stops moving? - MessAge Media: Our Columnists

I am not a scientist but I do believe this incident was a miracle few thousand years ago and it is still a miracle containing a significant scientific clue. Although at present our limited minds cannot fully understand this, we will appreciate the scientific accuracy of this miracle once science makes some more discoveries!

I like this explanation from here: "How is such a phenomenon possible? “Is anything too extraordinary for Jehovah,” the Creator of the heavens and the earth? (Genesis 18:14) If he chooses to, Jehovah can manipulate the movement of the earth so that the sun and the moon would seem motionless to an earthly observer. Or he can let the movement of the earth and the moon remain undisturbed while refracting the rays from the sun and the moon in such a way that the light from these two luminaries continues to shine. Whatever the case, “no day has proved to be like that one” in human history.—Joshua 10:14."

This is one of those stories that says to me: Yup.. This is a fairytale book.
For the 'sun to stand still', we would need a suddent deceleration in the Earth's spinning motion. This would spell absolute disaster and the Earth's ecosystems would shatter.
Science: 1
Bible: 0

Examine the context and setting of Joshua chapter 10
Please notice the ' sun stood still ' for that battle of Joshua 10 vs 12,13
The context is Not talking about the whole earth, but at one place.
If the whole earth were bathed in daylight there would have been No need to send someone about that ' wonder done in Israel '- 2nd Chronicles 32 v 31.

The word ' sun ' could easily refer to Not a literal sun standing still, but daylight hours stood still. God could have the sun's light reflected to give added daylight time to that battle.

Human science can Not replace the Creator. Einstein noted that science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind. Just like good science in the wrong hands does damage, so Scripture in the wrong hands also does damage. Neither makes the other as wrong, but rather makes the wrong hands, so to speak, as wrong.

From what? And we would still have night approaching. There is no way - with our turning - that even a reflection could stand still.
*

True, we don't know how the sun's light could be bounced so that its light was still visible.
We do know the sun itself did Not go dark. A reflection would Not have to stand still, just the needed light or daylight hours still be visible.
