Its so fitting that the bible views the Tree of Knowledge as evil.
I dont understand why you consider the tree of KNOWLEDGE of good and evil to be evil. I consider the tree to be the law, which is good in itself, but its hard to live by the law, and cannot bring one closer to god. God did not banish them because they had the knowledge of good and evil, but because they disobeyed him.
We think that if we know what is good and evil, we will have a better chance and making good choices and pleasing god. Its not knowing what is good and what is evil that brings us closer to god. Its knowing the will of god. If we had no consciousness of evil, we would not be plagued by it, or tempted by it. So knowing evil, has not done us one bit of good. Instead its tripped us up.
I hope that god will oneday remove all traces of the knowledge of evil from my mind/soul so that it will never enter my mind. I have no use for the knowledge of evil. I only find use in the knowledge of good. Knowing god is eternal life, knowing evil is temptation and sin. And cain was told by god...why are you depressed and downcast...if you do right wont you be accepted? Knowing what was right, did not require the tree of knowledge of good and evil, knowing what was right, required only a relationship with god.
Sin was crouching at Cains door, because he had acquired the knowledge of evil, therefore that knowledge entered his mind, and was ready to trip him up.

Phillipians 4:8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.
Knowledge of good is what gives us peace.
