Too Much Religion?

The one possible exception I can think of is: a real prophet whose mind is not like mine, who knows the consequences of the self-sacrifice, and whose purpose is for human benefit.

Personally, I don't believe in prophets of any kind, yet I can see a situation of sacrificing one's life. If my wife and kids were at life risk from a home invader, and I absolutely knew my life would save theirs, then it is duty. I think many folks would agree.

Is it possible to have too much religion and/or to be too religious? What do you think and why? If so what would that entail?

Each individual soul carries past karmic records , which determine every aspect of where the person will be born , will he be able bodied or rich poor etc. And furthermore born with previously bonded souls + The "samskara's" .

Knowing god takes many life times , the creator longs to be known and therefore he accompanies the manifested , and experiences his own creation and itself through their eyes .

Now If someone has past karma for following an X path he would naturally carry a tendency which will draw him towards his goal naturally.
There are many who instantly get inspired towards monkhood. some develop a rejection towards faith.. all of this is past earnings or current life choices. even if you dedicate your entire life , it still might get you back in the cycle of rebirth to satisfy unfulfilled desires.
as tony said faith is everlasting and you carry it regardless in every action you do is also a valid way to enhance your progress.

if u mean too much religion dogma- that is true for those who are under stress for attaining a ticket to heaven within one life time. for rebirth/dharmic faiths cases its different. Also the reason why dharmic religions dont do forced conversions is to let people get attracted naturally.

The answer IMO is yes, there is such a thing.
once the value of another human being is less than your beliefs, you are too religious (or simply ignorant).
Please note i do not mean that for any specific religion, rather if one thinks his beliefs are mire important than ANY one.

It is possible because it is already so ! To believe in God takes no more than belief of a God , no more is needed , pray if you need help !

It's a quality vs quantity thing, but I'm not so sure theists or atheists here are often able to measure it.
You can never have enough (or too much) high quality religion, but there is always low quality religion lurking around (and present in the mentality of many ex-theists). When you have too much quantity of a low quality, then you have a bad thing because you have essentially people completely ignorant to their own religion using it as a beating stick and lack any sophistication in their world view and philosophy.
As for high quality religion in high quantity, now that might just bring the world out of it's current trash heap.

(p.s. and keep in mind, I'm not specifying any religion, I'm speaking broadly about any given religion in practice and it's impact within society)

What you said is noble and beautiful and I respect it.

Loving God and my neighbor as myself.
It depends upon the religion. Some religions are well balanced, so that even if you go deeper into them, they strengthen your tie to the world as well.

In Judaism, the more you seek God, the more you love your neighbor as yourself, the more you value family and community, the more you try to repair the world -- you can't do one without the other.

But there are other types of religions where you could, for example, become a hermit or ascetic and withdraw from the world or purge yourself of all good things in the world, even bring harm upon yourself. There are religionists who spend their time in prayer and evangelism and Bible studies and "ministries" but neglect their families, abuse their wives, and don't give a hoot for the poor, the sick, and the oppressed. You can CERTAINLY have too much of these sort of religions.

IMO..Religion is only belief of understanding in to being in life, not only for God, but the god himself he thinks to be. Until himself has an experience in falling in life, religious will he have faith for more..
