My own religion
It's been dwindling for a couple of decades now so covid i would say is largely not even a factor. Christians, especially Evangelicals, have just been shrinking their membership largely on their own efforts. Add in some sex scandals from those who are hyperobsessed with the sex of others and why would anyone find the Church appealing?

I saw a recent video with a former one young, who in effect said he couldn't be an Evangelical, because Jesus's words where about loving the downtrodden ones.

Exactly. When the "pedophile priest" scandal hit, my wife, who's a life-long Catholic, stopped going for about two months [as I did]. After that, I encouraged her [and I] to return as I could see the effect of her not attending. I almost stopped going [and I still might] because of the right-wing position the bishops were taking on political issues. I left the Knights of Columbus for that exact reason 4 years ago.

BTW, my general beliefs are more aligned with Buddhist teachings, but don't tell any others here, OK? Just our secret. Shhhhhhhh.

Covid had a good impact on it....

A new IFS analysis using the American Family Survey suggests that religious attendance has declined significantly in the past two years. The share of regular churchgoers is down by 6 percentage points, from 34% in 2019 to 28% in 2021.

According to data collected in April/May 2020 by Barna Group, one-in-three practicing Christians dropped out of church completely during COVID-19. Last June, the AP broke a story about many houses of worship in the U.S. that were shuttered forever due to the pandemic . What’s worse, church membership in the U.S. dropped below 50% for the first time in 2020, according to Gallup data dating back to 1940.

The following is an excerpt from an academic paper;

Historical Views of Homosexuality: Ancient Greece

...

Grooming appeared apparent back then.
That's pederasty, which is between grown men and young boys. That's separate from homosexuality in general. Weirdly, you can find pederasty being acceptable in some cultures still today, whereas at same time they will punish consensual homosexuality between adults with the death penalty or prison. Afghanistan is a good example of this. Sex with boys is widespread and nothing is done about it but if you're a gay man who wants to be with a grown man - run for your life.
Indeed. There is society in Papua New Guinea in which a pubescent boy's rite of passage into manhood is to fellate an elder tribal ... to "completion". It's believed that the boy is receiving the elder's essence and beginning his journey to manhood, but there is no further relationship between the two. The newly initiated young man will marry and raise his own family.

Long term, not really. A pandemic is an outlier and we have a long term trend people have been leaving in droves for deacdes now to suggest covid doesn't really explain dwindling church membership that well.
With covid that just slammed the breaks 9n a lot of stuff and all kinds of numbers went way up and way down during that period. But we know even before that and still today people are leaving the church. Amd a lot of it is over things like obsessing over LGBT stuff, brazen hypocrisy, a dumb resustance against science, and other ways (esoecially Evangelicals as the trend of leaving seems to have started there) Christians harangue the world while claiming their own crap doesn't stink.

I do say so because covid didn't start about 20 years ago whwn this trend began.
Amd, because, yes, 2020 is a year of outliers and abnormalities in statistics because of how widespread and profound the impacts of covid were.

Catholic Clergy do seem to be the most worldly of those commanded to not be of this world. That's hiw Bill Maher was able to get a Catholic Priest (or whatever he was) on Religilous to ridicle and mock the gaudiness and extravagant flamboyance of wealth that is the Vatican.
