What's really despicable is that the Catholic Church hasn't came out to say anything about this yet, only the head cleric in Uganda. Even though he still states the immorality of homosexuality, he has at least stated that Ugandans should have compassion for these people as they would anyone else.

First, if anyone bothered to take a look at the bill, instead of listening to the controlled media in America, the UK, or Canada, you'd realize the bill won't sanction angry mobs going around and killing gay people. The only reason under which someone can be sentenced to death is if they knowingly transmit HIV to someone under 18 or with any sort of disability.

The bill should be called the "Save Human Life" or "Save the Family" bill instead.

For everyone else s education, here is the FULL TEXT of the bill.

To date, the bill has not been amended and this is the version re-introduced on February 7, 2012.

Some excerpts;
2. The Offense of Homosexuality.
A person who commits an offense under this section shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for life.
12. Same Sex Marriage.
A person who purports to contract a marriage with another person of the same sex commits the offense of homosexuality and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for life.

I can see where there was some confusion over the wording related to the aggravated homosexual acts in the medias overview of it. However that doesnt change what it is they are proposing in relation to the offense of homosexuality and I wonder if the penalty for aggravated homosexuality is the same as the same offenses for aggravated heterosexuality.

Many elected officials who spoke, either in person or by proxy, strayed away from this sentiment, often invoking language laden with colonialist implications such as "barbaric" and "uncivilized" to mock Ugandan leaders. Such comments are not just offensive, but counterproductive, since they echo the self-serving justifications for colonial conquests in the name of Christian salvation or Enlightenment.

Worse, a number of them called for economic sanctions against Uganda in the event the legislation were to pass, and received big applause for it. The threat of economic sanctions is effective, but very problematic: if deployed, sanctions could lead to the collapse of social order in a country like Uganda, endangering many more lives of LGBT Ugandans than the legislation itself would. And yet, none of the speakers opposed the sanction or even voiced a concern or caution.

The death penalty is often the sentence for aggravated rape, however it is only mandated by law in this bill. The death penalty mandate was removed from all other offenses in 2009, the same year this bill was first introduced.

So...if I am to understand...the only reason one would be executed in Uganda is for aggravated rape (Im not sure how that differs from regular rape) and aggravated homosexual acts.

That doesnt seem right.

The death penalty is only mandated by law for aggravated homosexuality (same sex rape, pedophilia, etc. Offenses more often than not committed by adult heterosexuals) in the pending bill.

The death penalty is not mandated by law for any other offense, although it can still be handed down as the penalty by a court for any other offense, such as treason, piracy, aggravated rape , murder, etc.

The irony being that this legislation was inspired by conservative Evangelical Christians, and the Prime Minister of Uganda, along with several legislators have close ties to the National Christian Foundation, the Fellowship Foundation—aka, the Family, the International Foundation, the Wilberforce Foundation, C Street, etc...
