This is what I've come to understand as traditionally the Midwestern United States.

I didn't think of Illinois and what's east of it as typically "Midwest" because of Detroit, Chicago and the industries in that corner. Midwest is for me great empty plains or fields and no big cities.

Ohio is basically cornfields with one big city - Columbus - and a bunch of dying towns and smaller cities (yes, Cleveland and Cincinnati are dying cities, too).

The fetters that fetter best are the fetters that fetter least.
I disagree with that, as I think it's more case by case, and ultimately I'm more pragmatist than idealist.

I will say that there are plenty of 'good intentioned' interventions that have unintended negative consequences, though.

Colorado is definitely West.
Do you know the TV show Dr Quinn Medicine Woman? In Italy it is known as The Lady of the West. :)

Yeah, I would consider Colorado to be West. I've encountered some bit of disagreement over what constitutes "Southwest." I've seen some maps where Colorado might be considered the "Rocky Mountain" region. The government might have its own designations, but other than that, it seems to be pretty open-ended.

There have been many people who thought they were wise in their own estimation and thought they knew better than the free market. Each of them is ultimately proven wrong.

It's cool that you have your beliefs and all, but that seems more jingoistic than anything.

St. Louis and Kansas City are pretty decent sized. Minneapolis-St. Paul would also be considered a big city. Funny thing about Illinois is that, apart from the Chicago metro area, it's really just one big flat plain, mostly rural.

I'd divide some states based upon people
I know from them, eg, PA, ND, SD, & even
a wee bit'o western NY.

I just see it more as a geographical designation, but it has nothing to do with the people or the governments in those states, since that's kind of a mixed bag anyway.
