It still happens, and even just one is far too many. You can't give years of life back, but the state could at least give lavish amounts of money to those wrongly imprisoned and sentenced to make the rest of their life easier and more comfortable. Someone wrongly put to death, there's nothing that can be done except "oops."I think DNA test has made a big difference now in preventing innocent people from being falsely penalized for a crime.
Which is sad. It fixes nothing, it restores nothing, it prevents nothing. It's violently wasting life when life has already been violently wasted. The U.S. made its first execution by nitrogen gas today.

And in Japan today they sentenced an arsonist that killed 36 people to death.

Venezuala abolished it in 1863, Michigan the first state in 1840, also when a failed attempt to abolish it England happened, where it was a topic since at least the mid 18th century. Some pagan and aboriginal cultures have also lacked it and viewed it as taboo. And, of course, Jesus stood against it with "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."And it's not. Opposition to the death penalty is a modern thing, usually from progressives (which I am most certainly not). Regardless of religion, I'll always support the death penalty because I accept there's evil people who cannot be rehabilitated.
I did not look up numbers of ratios or data. As the comparisons are not similar since the USA has gun rights and a free country. And your answer to the question is what?
So it PREVENTS the murderer commiting another murder. It is not a proven DETERRENT.I did not look up numbers of ratios or data. As the comparisons are not similar since the USA has gun rights and a free country.
A completely different country than most. But i was clear about my point of view. Killing a murderer reduces another death by the same perpetrator. It's basic common sense.

Are there no other "free" countries for comparison (although likely to be ones that have less than 120 guns per 100 citizens) ?a free country

You're not truly free unless you can shoot each other.According to the Cato Institute and the Fraser Institute, the US ranks 17th (tied with the UK) based on their freedom index.

... which is an increase in 4 places from 2022. Good job Biden, I guess.

Can you point to any verse in the NT where Jesus says rape is not morally acceptable?
Jesus said… “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.” Mark 9:42
Hard for me not to remember Darryl George, 18, who has not been in his regular classroom in Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas, since Aug. 31. Instead, he has either been serving in-school suspension or spending time in an off-site disciplinary program. His Houston-area school district, Barbers Hill, has said George’s long hair, which he wears in neatly tied and twisted locs on top of his head, violates a district dress code that limits hair length for boys.According to the Cato Institute and the Fraser Institute, the US ranks 17th (tied with the UK) based on their freedom index.

That can't be right, Jesus had long hair.Hard for me not to remember Darryl George, 18, who has not been in his regular classroom in Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas, since Aug. 31. Even though your hair insists on keeping on growing (even in Texas), you are not free to allow it to in that school district.
In this respect, Americans (and just now, especially Texans) make me laugh -- my sad laugh, but still. This boy would be okay armed to the teeth, but those lengthy tresses, no matter how tied back, represent a serious threat to the well-being of everybody!
Freedom --- HAH!
The legal system should serve to relinquish the human desire for revenge, not use that desire to indulge.Again, if you ever lose a family member to a criminal, you will seek justice too.
"Serious concerns" my foot. I have serious concerns Volker Turk is a closed-minded ideologue. Did "Kenny" really thrash? I don't accept this "journalist" Lee Hedgepeth's story at face value. I think he is biased and, I'll be generous and say, "misreporting". How come this ersatz journalist calls him "Kenny", were the close friends? Did Elizabeth Sennett, Kenneth Smith's victim, "thrash" while he repeatedly stabbed her death?"The UN, EU and anti-death penalty activists have condemned the first execution of a prisoner using nitrogen gas.
A journalist who witnessed the execution told the BBC that Smith thrashed violently on the gurney.
The execution process began at 19:53 local time and Smith was pronounced dead about half of an hour later at 20:25.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, said he had "serious concerns this novel and untested method of suffocation by nitrogen gas may amount to torture, or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment".
In a statement, EU officials called nitrogen gas "a particularly cruel and unusual punishment".
"I've been to four previous executions and I've never seen a condemned inmate thrash in the way that Kenneth Smith reacted to the nitrogen gas,", Alabama journalist Lee Hedgepeth told the BBC's Newsday programme.
"Kenny just began to gasp for air repeatedly and the execution took about 25 minutes total."
(Alabama officials had said in an earlier court filing they expected Smith to lose consciousness within seconds and die in a matter of minutes.) "

Fair enough, I've never heard of him - what do you know? - but I have heard of the UN. And the EU. And the White House. It seems consistently reported it took about 20+ minutes to kill him, rather than the seconds claimed beforehand.I have serious concerns Volker Turk is a closed-minded ideologue
I know that he is a politician by virtue of his position. That is sufficient to raise such concerns.Fair enough, I've never heard of him - what do you know? - but I have heard of the UN. And the EU.
