I dont know enough about Putin to really vote in the poll. That said, I do like Russia.

The main thing that concerns me is his apparent desire to reestablish a Soviet Union and any totalitarian things some people here are saying he has done. I also don't agree with the laws to protect "traditional marriage". However, any homophobia is likely due to Orthodox Christian beliefs on his part.

I wish the US and Russia had a better relationship, though.

I detest Putin and everything he stands for. His regime's treatment of gays, suppression of a free press and free speech, state centralism, militarism, extreme nationalism, cult of personality...the list is endless.

He is a KGB thug who rules over a mafia state and glorifies Soviet murderers such as Stalin and Andropov, that whitewashes Stalinist era crimes and which is creating a kind of nationalistic fascism in Russia that has led to the deaths of innocent people in Ukraine, an international civilian airliner and not to mention his destruction of the Chechnyan city of Grozny in 2000:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Grozny_(1999–2000)

The 1999–2000 battle of Grozny was the siege and assault of the Chechen capital Grozny by Russian forces, lasting from late 1999 to early 2000. The siege and fighting left the capital devastated. In 2003 the United Nations called Grozny the most destroyed city on Earth

If anyone can "like" this man then they must have a screw loose. (No offence intended)

I really don't think he's doing all of these things by himself. Somebody is backing him. Somebody has completely lost all hope in the democratic process, and that is why one person is being put forward as the nation's saviour.

I do believe the danger with Putin is that he well may be willing to recreate the Soviet Union.

He's not a Communist. He's an admirer of Silvio Berlusconi, one of the most famous self-made men, emblem of fair Capitalism.
Putin certainly wants a Capitalistic development of his country, but not at cost of social and economic disequilibrium. He's against the ones who want to prevent Russian little Capitalism from taking the lead.
His nationalistic ideas are necessary because the Russian people deserves stability and deserve to trust their potentialities and their excellence.

The country you're from has destroyed and damaged far more lives and countries than Putin ever has. Your reasoning is illogical.

Aside from destabilizing the Middle East and great parts of Asia, the UK has been involved in centuries of oppression and suppression. Not to mention the war in Iraq and the 'overthrow' of Gaddafi, where the ensuing pandemonium has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in civil wars. You can blame America for Iraq, but Libya falls squarely on the blame of the UK and other NATO members. There was no reason to overthrow Gaddafi. Now Libya has a civil war between Islamic militants and Warlords.

How is that any different from Putin? Are the lives of Europeans more valuable than the rest of the world? Are the lives of Arabs less important? Even with the plane being shot down, which as sad and unfortunate as it was, it was ultimately an accident. In the 80s an American F-14 shot down an Iranian passenger jet killing hundreds. It was an accident. Did the world rise up to impose sanctions?

People in glass houses really should not throw stones.

Putin was a higher-up in the KGB, and I don't believe this leopard changed his spots that much. His attacks on Geogia, Crimea, and now the eastern Ukraine tells me that he's probably pretty much the same leopard as in his past.

People who admire Berlusconi make me cringe.

well...people hate Berlusconi because they are envious of his wealth. Envious that he's a self-made man thanks to his intelligence.

envy is the same sentiment that Mr Satan had

It's curious that you didn't deny that you would like to own his wealth
His wealth is mostly irrelevant to the fact that he is a corrupt statesman who makes idiotic remarks and would probably have sex with any living woman in a 100 mile radius.

If a politician is gay, people will criticize him because he's gay.
If a politician likes beautiful women, people will criticize him because he likes beautiful women.
People are never satisfied. They don't do but criticize.

same thing as for Putin. If he had been too liberal about preaching homosexuality in schools, he would have been criticized.

From what I've been reading, it seems many Russians are aware of the propaganda on the government TV channels and don't necessarily believe it or agree with it.

that has led to the deaths of innocent people in Ukraine, an international civilian airliner

I largely agree with your comment, except this. Ukraine has been taken over by neo-Nazis who have been massacring innocent people, such as the Odessa massacre in May at the Trade Unions House where unarmed people were gunned down and then burnt in selected areas to make it look like they died in a fire. One of the dead was a pregnant woman who was apparently strangled to death by thugs who hung a Ukrainian flag out of the window after they murdered her. The government supporters were throwing Molotovs at the building, which is what started the fire. They were also shooting guns at the people who were trying to escape the building. All of this has been caught on video! You can even hear the screams and the pleas for help of the pregnant lady as she was being murdered coming from the window of the room on some of these videos.

The Odessa Massacre - What REALLY Happened | SCG News

The Ukrainian government has also been bombing civilian areas in Eastern Ukraine, reportedly using white phosphorus, as well which a war crime:

The bombing of eastern Ukraine - World Socialist Web Site
'White phosphorus' reports: Ukraine military 'dropped incendiary bombs' on Slavyansk ? RT News

As for the plane, there is no evidence that Russia had anything to do with it, but there is evidence that the Ukrainian government and their goons are behind it:

The U.S. has Installed a Neo-Nazi Government in Ukraine | Global Research
The BBC Supports Ukraine’s Neo-Nazis | Global Research

We're being lied to by the corporate media and its war-mongering propaganda. The Western military machine is trying to start a war with Russia. Does that make Putin a "good guy"? Nope. But the West is far worse in what we do to people around the globe.

Yeah, I have been suspicious that Russia is not so in the wrong about Ukraine as some people think. I think Russia is still sort seen as the anti-America. Not necessarily in the sense of being against America, but being a polar opposite. Incidentally, the security in Moscow airport was so much nicer than in any American airport I've been in :D
I still don't know much about it, though. Im reading some of your links.
