My definition of religion is rather broad; what is most important to you in life, or your deepest convictions. I sometimes forget myself and think that word "religion" means the same thing to everyone else.

Ok. I was WAAAYYYY to tired, overloaded, run down, and ailling
to express or even think anything coherent the other week....
never mind unwravel Willamena's posts. lolol.

I don't know why I kept thinking of masks negatively.
I have a wonderful mask at home, a classic plaster type mask on a handle,
in an attractive woman's mold, with music/manuscript paper as it's 'covering'...
and bells on it's tips...
And of course there is Joseph Campbel. lol

Masks are a thing of beauty, with which we present our idea/s of Self to others.
Even an "ugly" mask can reveal beauty sublime.
A "lying" mask can present a truth.
A "plain" mask.... can speak of other things.....

Occultists are accutely aware of their masks and cloaks...
and they choose, don, and change them with the greatest of care & style.
Occultists are also aware that the greater majority of people
confuse/fuse the mask with the Self.
Most people believe they ARE their mask/s in some hardwired way,
and so of course it never dawns on them that everyone else around them
is also in the midst of a Mask/Self relationship.

This gives rise to an entirely different kind of "world view"/ "state of REALity".
(of which I shall speak more of later)

I would say that this art of mask and cloak...
of internal Self awareness...Observer awakened...
artfully, selectively, craftily expressing I-dea and I'mage outward...
purpose-fully detached... yet fully & dynamically engaged...
to those looking on... and even in...
(to whatever chosen end/purpose) most essentially defines the Occultist.

Why do Occultists so often prefer 'cloaks' to 'coats'?

To me it just means "hidden" -- it's literal meaning, I believe. As in "I tested your stool specimen Mr. Smith, and found occult blood, so we're going to do a colonoscopy in the morning." eek

When I was in nursing school the instructor asked the class "who can tell me what occult blood is"? One student answered "devil worship".

Well, I have several opinions on this:

1) I imagine that cloaks are more open, and coats you can button or zip, and therefore they're harder to take off. Cloaks also tend to be heavier fabric, and they wrap around the entire body. They have no definite shape, they simply keep the wearer warm or hidden. Coats have a shape that you must fit into to be able to wear them. Sizes and whatnot. Cloaks don't have that issue, there's just one size fits all.

2) I think it depends on the person in question who prefers whatever. Because I'm sure some occultists like the imagery of coats to cloaks. However, the cloak is a more likely candidate simply because of its simplicity and inherent quality.

I especially enjoyed your thoughts in answer #1.
I liked your idea that cloaks have no definate shape,
whereas a coat "must fit" (or "be" fitted). :rainbow1:
cloak=fluid/chang'able
coat=stiff/'just so'

Coats are also much harder to take off and put on.
Think also... a coat of paint, or laquor, or sealant.

You 'got it'.(the idea I mean of course)
