What is a perfect religion?

What would constitute an ideal religion, assuming all religions should have common ideals?

I'm paraphrasing here, but one whose central tenet is: "Shut up about your beliefs and rules, and act in compassion towards others" would be perfect, IMO.

Agreed. :D

26If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

' course, that pretty much puts RF out of business. :cover:

One that humans couldn't possibly misunderstand?

Oh...we can misunderstand everything....I guess there isn't a perfect religion, then. ;)

Which could be interpreted as act for the greater good or do the right thing...

I wholeheartedly concur.

I am a scientist by trade yet I feel a common belief and unity of purpose would help galvanise all of us into acting holistically and responsibly.

I just dont like any religion I have yet tried to understand...thats the problem!

Perhaps...but again much of the mythology and pantheon is incompatible with empirical truth, which for me is the fundamental aspect of a true religion, a search for truth.
I wasn't beign that serious, but i will fight my corner...

The part you pointed is merely a front for people to understand inteligent concepts in a simple way... But the actual, knowledge of god, life, is there, but must be looked for.

Is there a general theme that you dislike, or is it specific things in each?

Specifics in each Booko, almagamated they are a kaleidoscope of perfection to the mind that can glimpse it.

I find they are all parochial in some way, I think there needs to be a universal context, that even a creature from another galaxy could appreciate...maybe thats going too far...after all its all about perceptions and don't they vary in extremes on just one planet?

That's a fine way to describe how I feel about the religion I follow. I do look at all the religions as a "kaleidoscope of prefection."

I find they are all parochial in some way, I think there needs to be a universal context, that even a creature from another galaxy could appreciate...maybe thats going too far...after all its all about perceptions and don't they vary in extremes on just one planet?

Well, they all arose in times that had specific needs for the time and place they began, so that explains some of the parochialism, I think.

Other things, well, religions are not static and people do tend to add their personal ideas over time, sometimes for good, often not.

Speaking truthfully Tau, a perfect religion would be an illusion.

Greed might be a good unifying theme, as it is something most people partake of when given the opportunity. Issuing Tazer's to the "faithful" might also be a good idea for the times that their attempts to convert others fall flat. Their theme could be, "What's the buzz... tell me what's a happenin' ..."

Seriously though, I hope we never have a "perfect" religion that everyone would flock to. I think that it would only succeed in becoming a form of institutionalized mediocrity.

But YmirGF greed does not unify, it instead creates division, suffering and ecological damage, how could this be used as a rallying call?

So not 'anything' could be used surely?

There is in my sphere of vision, a universal doctrine as yet unwritten, but existing in potentia.
