What is the scariest movie that you have ever seen?

"Expelled" is probably the scariest movie I've ever seen, but mostly because I know how many people probably actually think it's true.

As far as actual scary movies, "The Ring" is the only one that ever actually scared me.
Yeah, Expelled, Hell House and Jesus Camp are pretty high on my list.

The American remake of the Ring or Ringu? I liked both, but slightly prefer Ringu if only 'cause I saw it first. And Sadako was far creepier in the original Japanese release.

I'm a huge horror fan and rarely find horror films frightening, but Session 9 is one of those rare films that was disturbing and got under my skin- if only they'd edited the last 10 minutes or so it would've been far more effective. Nakata's Dark Water was also an amazing horror film that was genuinely scary and melancholy (which made the horror all the more powerful). Alien terrified me as a kid, as did Carpenter's The Thing. The Haunting still has some scary scenes even after having seen it so many times- some of the best use of auditory cues to scare the audience.

Years of horror films have left me cold, unemotional and slightly hungry so I'll list a few that got reactions from my friends.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: It's more in keeping with the tone of the book than some of the others and therefore a lot more spooky.

Silent Hill: Ok so the CGI isn't brilliant, but it gives people nightmares anyway. I've yet to meet anybody who wasn't freaked out by Red Pyramid.

Donnie Darko: This isn't a horror film exactly and the psychological effect is subtle. Donnie Darko doesn't make you jump out of your seat, but it will leave you unsettled for a long time after watching it.

The Grudge: Both the Japanese version and the modern remake are the kind of film that you can watch all the way through without effect. It's only when you then have to walk back home alone at night that your imagination kicks in.

Zombie Flesh Eaters: Not in the least bit scary if you know a thing or two about special effects, but guaranteed to freak out anybody with a weak stomach. This is the perfect film for anybody who enjoys B movies and wants enough mindless gore to make SAW limp away in shame. Don't watch it if you expect good acting, good dubbing and a carefully thought out plot. The plot itself can be summed up as "here are some zombies".

Sleepy Hollow: Not really scary if you're more than 10 years old but still a gem of a film and well worth watching if you haven't already seen it.

How could I forget Carnival of Souls!
And the last 20 minutes of Audition are grueling, disturbing and just plain terrifying. One of my top 20 horror films of all time.

Shyanek, I agree with Silent Hill- I think I'm one of maybe 10 people who loved the film. It's vaguely reminiscent of the nightmarish worlds conveyed in Dario Argento films. And Sleepy Hollow is one of the few Burton films I really really like- it's an homage to Hammer Horror films so I'm kinda obligated to love it.

See, I don't find The Orphanage scary, I find it sad. But then, I'd already seen The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth, so I kinda knew what to expect.

I haven't been scared by a movie since I was a wain, I used to watch hammer house and other age inapropriate dross when I was babysitting since I was about 11,but I still appreciate the build up of psychological suspense in a good movie.

Definitely. Del Toro's films, and The Orphanage, always struck me as sorrow-as-horror rather than terror-as-horror. I love Devil's and Pan's both; they use dread and an ominous atmosphere perfectly, yet both conclude with a devestating sadness tempered by a gentle sweetness.

The ending of the Orphanage made me cry like a 14 year old girl at the premiere of Twilight.

The original Alien movie really got to me. I was rattled for a couple of days after the first time I saw it.

Good call, Jesus Camp was pretty scary, too. Actually, at one point the woman in there says something like "Liberals should be scared" or something, and I remember thinking "Hell yeah, I'm scared. You're brainwashing our kids into destroying this country".

The American version. I haven't seen the Japanese one, although I would like to at some point. We're making our way through movies pretty quickly these days, but we're still way behind.

Likewise. Pan's Labyrinth as well. My friend and I left the theatre red faced and soaked.

I have to say I was unimpressed with Pan's Labyrinth.

Also, as most people have said, after you get to a certain point, not much really scares you anymore. Probably the scariest thing I've ever seen I just saw the other night, though. It wasn't a movie, but a TV show about ghosts. Normally, I watch them with no problem at all, but this one was good. It had a story about a little girl whose room was pretty much right at the top of the stairs. Every night she would hear footsteps come slowly up the stairs when she knew that her parents were already in their room. When the footsteps got to the top, a man's figure would appear in her doorway and stand there for a few moments watching her. Then it would go back down the stairs. They did a re-enactment, of course, and it's probably the scariest thing I've ever seen, mostly because I know I'd have been scared ****less as a kid.
