Thank you Gursikh
I see you have more than just faith :)

If others come to this post I would be interested in their opinion also, no matter how limited their exposure to Sikh Philosophy, religion or terms. I hope other members of the forum, would enjoy reading people's input as much as me :)

Thank you!

I want to have an opinion but I know so little about it that I cannot properly comment. So far it seems more similar to Hinduism than any other religion I am aware of.

Thank you Madhuri.
I think the majority of people know little or nothing about Sikhism, as I also knew nothing until I put it into a search engine one day to try to compare it with what I had learnt about Vedanta. I was pleasently suprised and have felt attracted to some aspects of Sikhism since. This is partly why I opened this thread, just to hear a little from people who know little or even a lot.

There is a branch of people who consider themselves "Sanatan Sikhs". To my knowledge these people still recognise Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism for the reader not familir with that term) but follow the teachings of the Sikh Gurus. Personally I find this strand most appealing as Sikh philsopophy, specifically that of their Holly Book (11th Guru in the form of a book) Sri Guru Granth Sahib www.srigranth.org, is very clear and liberating. There are many references to Hindu Gods as well as Islam terminology which makes it approachable for those coming from a Sanatana Dharma background or a Abrahamic background. Most of this is disputable of course, but with further study it holds a depth of profound philsophical insight without fancy language and complexication that some sources suffer from.

The sikhs don't have a priesthood and are very equal and liberated in their attitudes towards religion, race, gender etc. Something I think would appeal to many of the members of this forum, looking for something beautiful yet not restricting. Just my humble opinion. :)

Sikhism combines the Philosophical strong points of Hinduism and Sufi Islam.Karma and Reincarnation ,Dharma,Moksha from Hinduism(advaita vedanta).Islam's monotheism and banning Idolatry (this would be helpful for masses who have no knowledge of Scriptures). But I would not say that Sikhism is similar to Islam.

Having said that ,Sikhism is NOT as infamous as Jainism is for example. They have a distinct identity, and it is easy to find out a Sikh from a Hindu.

I want to know why Sikh men have to have long hair and wear turbans. What is the spiritual significance? Why is it necessary?

Hi Madhuri
Both men and women who take Sikh baptism or who are preparing for it, do not cut their hair. Men and sometimes women must wrap their hair. This was introduced by Guru Gobind Singh. It is called Kesh and is one of the 5 Ks.

We have discussed this briefly in these two threads.

Personally I do not feel it is necessary for me to grow my hair nor am I considering it, at least it does not stop me from appreciating the beauty of Sikh philosophy. Some Sikhs are very proud of their indentity and it is a part of their commitement to their daily way of life.

There are many religions extant and I hope many more come to the fore - religions being paths towards the higher truth. While it is not necessary for a person to know deeply about all religions, it would help if he kept in mind that there are many approaches to the truth and one's own way is not the only way. Most of all, all religions and other discoveries of man are the heritage of all mankind. Saying thus, I would like to state that Sikhism is as much my heritage as any Sikh's, though I am not a practicing Sikh nor can I claim to know much about Sikhism.

To answer the OP question as to my opinion on Sikhism, I would say it is one of the most dynamically practiced of religions and its strength lies in the inclusive spirit with which it was founded. However, an erroneous assumption of its Islamic links (when the link is actually Sufi) may in future guide it into an exclusive path and sever it from its greater association with liberal Hinduism.

I would like to say that my beliefs are probably closer to Sikhism than most other religions, so I like and am fascinated by Sikhism. I like how on one hand it is Dharmic (ie Karma and reincarnation) yet Abrahamic as well (Monotheism, scripture) and the 5 K's are fascinating IMO. However, I don't know any Sikhs personally.

In my former hometown of Vancouver, we have the largest Sikh population, outside of India, in the world. Aside from that nasty business with proponents of a Sikh homeland, to be called Khālistān, a few years back, culminating with the Air India terrorist act, my experience with members of the Sikh faith has been very good. They are normally a very sweet people who almost exude kindness and have a very strong work ethic. Sikh's add a distinct and colourful richness to Vancouver culture. Overall, they are wonderful people...

... aside from being involved in the assassination of Indira Gandhi ... that is... but I suppose every religion has their fanatics.

They are Sikhs, having moved here from India a few years ago. They are extremely good people, with integrity and good morals. They are fairly outgoing (which is tough, considering the grandparents don't really speak very good English).
