The skull is held together by bone and does not need muscles to fit it in place. The reference to the muscles of mastication as a restrictive process is possible factor. The ideas is thought to be associated with the need for more bone support the muscles which creates structural reasons. It is also possible that with the gene change had more to do with the lack of need for larger muscle strength as humans diet changed and occurred simultaneously with other changes in the skull in evolution. The point is that the mutation was selected for as an advantage during human evolution.I didn't say what controlled the brain and the skull, but I said what controlled the skull
alone from further growing while no strong muscles to fit it in place?
