Some of these sound like slightly forced interpretations.Europe is catching up with USA.

When far-right protesters marched with tiki torches through Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017, chanting — among other hateful messages — “Jews will not replace us,” many Americans were stunned and horrified. I'm not saying it doesn't exist here, but what DS linked was US based (Confederate flags, white supremacism etc). These things don't mean much if anything to most folks here.
I would be afraid of it anywhere, especially since the far right in Europe (e.g., in Italy, Hungary, and the Netherlands) has been gaining more political ground in recent years.
Repackaged and relatively sanitized presentations of white-supremacist ideas—such as, in my opinion, some of the views espoused by Douglas Murray and Geert Wilders—would be quite concerning to me if I lived in a country where said ideas started gaining more mainstream acceptance.
Trying to find people who were as socially conservative as me and fell down a rabbit hole. I was a teenager.
Can't say I've seen it in the UK.

What/who got you out of the rabbit hole?
Confederate flags don't mean the same thing to
everyone. Liberals infer slavery & white supremacy.
Many who sport flat feel it's about independence
&/or pride in southern roots.
It's a terrible symbol because it's so inflammatory.
But all should be open to different meanings,
not assuming it can only be the worst.
It's the new normal.
My wife and I attended services last night at our synagogue, and the first person we encountered was, as (now) usual, the guard who unlocked and opened the door. He's a very big and very pleasant guy; he's also very well armed.
I sincerely hope that he would view two or three people with shaved heads, Nazi tattoos, and swastika adorned t-shirts, with considerable concerned.
And what about shirts bearing a picture of Marx, Lenin, or Che? For better or for worse, these have become normalized. Counter-cultural efforts to broadcast/normalize the Nazi thug look should not be viewed as OK.

Growing up, reading, different views etc.
I'm still socially conservative but it is very hard to find folks who are as conservative as I am. I can imagine a lot of people falling into these groups like I did because there aren't any more acceptable groups outside of religious communities.
I don't know what it means. I just mean it's not a flag that has any meaning to most Brits at all.
Oh, the things that we can believe when we're young.
Can you believe that I once thought socialism could work?
That evaporated when I fully entered the workforce,
& saw how business & government each functioned.
We all have the right to make mistakes when young.
It's our job at the time. We learn this way.
As a northerner (in USA), I find that flag to be
anachronistic...foreign...strange...backward.
And even smacking of treason.
But I engage such people with no problem.

I'm not sure about this. I'm no expert on American history but I'm aware of what connotations the flag has (support for racism, white supremacy, white nationalism). I doubt you'll see many being waved at gay pride marches.

Yes, but if I asked most of my family members etc. they wouldn't have a clue. If they did it might be 'slavery', but obviously to Americans it seems to be way more nuanced in some ways. But it's not a flag that is meaningful to Brits in the sense of it not being a flag that ever represented any of us.

I would be more of afraid of any Leftist who are watching, then either uniformed groups. The lefty big brother spies are watching and waiting to judge and will make you a target, or ally, based on your apparent choice. The Political left has the biggest propaganda machine, and they have conditioned even babies in school which side to choose or report. The real nazi are in the background; Old Soviet Union Leftist KGB. They do not skin their heads like concentration camp victims, but they are the ones with hair.
The modern rise of the Nazi or skin heads, increased with the rise of Liberal led reverse discrimination, that is now finally being forced to go away. You cannot indoctrinate this Liberal bias and hate in colleges, as easy as before.
I was a teen during the hippie and love generation years; 1970's, where racism and sexism was minimized for a few years, at least in New England where I grew up. This was due to youthful vision of equal opportunity for all, based on merit; judge people by content of character; merit, and not by their skin color. There was a youth vision of all playing by one set of rules, with nobody cheating with dual standards like systemic racism. Anyone with common could see the difference back then. Our dividing line was the age 30 but not race or sex; old school versus new school.
This changed when the old habits of systemic racism; political Left, stated to go back toward two sets of rules, but now in a reverse way; reverse discrimination. It was once again ignoring merit, in favor of sex and skin color. This was a renewal of racism and sexism, once again judging people by race and sex, with two sets of rules, but not based on merit; new alt Democrat reality.
This reverse sexism and racism activated a defensive reaction, in those who were most discriminated; the angry white male. The Left created a problem, and still blame those who fought for the new class of disenfranchised.
The boneheads on the Left never seem to understand, that that new generation was not around in the 1950's or earlier in 1840, yet they were being blamed and victimized for something they had no memory or part of. It was Lefty religion based on an Original Sin Plagiarism. Just as all have original sin due to past; Adam and Eve. Now, everyone, whether you did anything or not had the original sin of racism or sexism, simply due to your skin color or sex. This illegal religious political irrationality is what spawned the resistance movements; grunge music of the angry white male victim who protested being accuse and excluded, not based on his personal actions, by this perverted Lefty religion ripoff. If you were to be blamed and condemned, falsely, why not get your money's worth and make it the cause and effect rational? This led to the skinheads expanding and getting more rebellious.
My guess is the relevance of the skin heads will start to decline, since reverse racism has been exposed for the racism it is, and the country is starting to reverse back toward one set of rules and the value of merit. However, the racist Democrats may not allow this change without a fight. I read an article where a Lefty High School got rid of Algebra, as their bonehead way to raise test scores. More and more Lefy run cities, by bonehead Leftist, are soft on crime and do not prosecute, to get better FBI crime numbers on paper. Lefty places illusion before merit. They wish to lead the race to the bottom. Merit races to the top but this is resisted by the Left, since their ideas dumb people down; will make all equally stupid and corrupt.
DEI is the worse version of this reverse discrimination; plagiarized original sin for reparations from innocent people. These are not victims but operatives for the modern integrated KKK of the Democrat party. This can be inferred by DEI meaning diversity, equity and inclusion. How many Republicans and people of faith are included in this diversity for equity without merit? It only allows operatives who are loyal to the Left and not to full diversity or merit. Luckily, corporations are pulling back less the skin heads find another evil to fight with evil.

When I first joined RF, I was an ultra-fundamentalist who believed LGBT people should be legally punished, people who didn't share my religion would go to Hell eternally, women were less capable of reason than men, the "West" was "immoral," etc.
The kindness and friendship of people on this forum, among other things, significantly spurred my reconsideration of my previous views. It's one reason I dislike overgeneralizations that claim that every single person who has harmful beliefs must be a bad person and should be entirely shunned or even shamed.
I see I was terribly remiss not to include a third scenario where Big Brother walked in with a spy camera in hand.
