Who is Satan? Or what does Satan represent to you?

Every one of us human beings has two minds. One is totally ours, and it is like a faint voice that always brings us order, directness, purpose. The other mind is a foreign installation. It brings us conflict, self-assertion, doubts, hopelessness . . .

Carlos Castaneda was an anthropologist. He wrote 12 books about his experiences with his mentor, a shaman named Don Juan Matus.

That doesn't necessarily follow.

If God did not create Satan then it follows that Satan must have
  1. Existed as long as God has existed;
  2. Existed longer than God has existed;
  3. Was created by some other force or;
  4. Spontaneously came into existence on his own.
And with sufficient power that he was able to defy God and not be destroyed. In any of these 4 events, Satan is not rendered ephemeral by tint of being created, not is he under God's power. Further, Satan is aware of our existence on a level only matched by God - i.e. he knows our thoughts, our words, our actions.

One conclusion that could be drawn from all this is that Satan is a being with equivalent power to God.

For those of you who believe Satan is a real being/entity, who is Satan? Where did he/it/she/they come from? What is Satan's relationship to other beings/entities, including deities, Angels (if you believe in them) and human beings?

For those of you who view Satan more figuratively or metaphorically, and not as a real being/entity, what does Satan represent to you?
I believe that he is a being.
Supposedly god created Lucifer. People have said that he was a "Beautiful angel". They also have said that he wanted more power than god and I believe that was a complete lie. Lucifer never wanted more power than god. The reason why god casted him out was because he was telling others the truth behind who god really was. christians believe that god is good and great and they think of Lucifer as someone who is evil.

Isn't the poster talking about Satan not Lucifer? Where are you getting your information about Lucifer?

A fifth possibility: Satan is a part of God.

I believe this to be true.

People have said that he was a "Beautiful angel".

I believe she still is.

They also have said that he wanted more power than god and I believe that was a complete lie. Lucifer never wanted more power than god.

I completely agree with you here.

The reason why god casted him out

Here I disagree. I don't believe God cast Lucifer out. I believe Lucifer still serves God.

christians believe that god is good and great and they think of Lucifer as someone who is evil.

Most seem to. I believe Lucifer is the bringer not of evil but of light.

I think of "Satan" as another obstacle that grows in your mind the more you try to fight against it. Usually it's better to find the good, rather than the bad.

That's not something I had considered, admittedly. But if that's the case then God is neither morally perfect, nor omnibenevolent, and he can in fact do wrong.

Also, he would have no moral justification for sending people to Hell as punishment for disobeying him because he would be the one leading people astray.

She? Don't you mean he?

Here I disagree. I don't believe God cast Lucifer out. I believe Lucifer still serves God.
Lucifer doesn't serve god. Why would Lucifer want to be a slave to god when we wants people to be free from gods slavery?

Most seem to. I believe Lucifer is the bringer not of evil but of light.
He is the light and the truth and the liberator.

Why do you believe this?
Because that is what I believe. I believe that the christians gave Lucifer the name Satan. I have gotten into arguments with christians before that they have gotten pissed when I call him by his real name "Lucifer". Christians hate it.

How can we believe the writings of men that lied about their writings being divine and whose intentions were to guilt other men into religious servitude and false rewards and punishments?

Example please of guilt tripping.
What false rewards and punishments do you have in mind ?

Please remember there is a BIG difference between the teachings of Christendom (so-called Christian but mostly in name only) and the first-century teachings of Christ as found in Scripture. Christendom mostly uses or goes by church customs or traditions - Matthew 15:9
