Isn't it explained by the fact the largest temple of the Baha'i faith is in Haifa? Ultranationalist Israelian have a tendency to smile on anything that is critical of Islam in general too.
Actually the relationship goes back further than the existence of Israel to the 19th century, and no the largest temple is not in Israel. There are the Administrative buildings, Shrine of the Bab, and holy sites, and many gardens on Mount Carmel. My experience is that it is the average Jews of Israel that respect the Baha'is. Many get married at near the Gardens and have their wedding pictures taken there. The ultranationalists and conservatives are in a world of their own.
