eternal soul?

matthew 10:28
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

i do not understand how one cannot continually live in fear if they believe this.
why would anyone want to live in fear?

I think they believe their faith in Jesus will protect them.

It depends on who you think "the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell" is.

An eternal soul being destroyed would simply be death. Yes I'd imagine people are afraid of it all ending but I can't really do anything about what god would do with whatever he creates. I'd hope he would be intelligent about it but no telling.

Nice! It's starting to make sense. :D

usually, in christianese ;) the One (with a capital O) refers to god.
but if one refers the One as their better half then by all means....

I don't. In my beliefs our true Self is God... aham brahmasmi in Sanskrit: 'I am God'. That's the nature of our true Selves, we are inseparable from God when we have attained the realization. Look at this picture:

The drop of water will merge with the rest of the water. Right now they are separated, as we are in this world, but they will merge and become inseparable, because they are the same. That's my belief, and why I don't fear for my "soul".

i am happy for you that you do not live under this guise of fear.
i'm just sad for those who believe this sort of thing.

but not just sad....frustrated because only negativity can come from fear

Make no mistake, there was a time I did live and think that way. Mostly as a 14 year old boy in confession every Saturday afternoon saying "Bless me Father, for I have sinned... I committed an act of impurity on Monday... on Monday... on Monday... on Monday... on Tuesday... on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I abused myself... " :D

Not saying my way now is the way, but it's what works for me and what I believe. ;)

The way I interpret that passage is that we --- you, me, each of us --- is "the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell" ("hell" being whatever hell we make for ourselves) so worry less about what other people might do to you, and keep a close eye on what you're doing to yourself.

"And I'm so
Terrified of no one else but me
I'm here all the time
I won't go away
It's me, yeah I can't get myself to go away
It's me, and I can't get myself to go away"
Matchbox 20 - Long Day

Not saying that's what that passage was supposed to mean, just that, for me, that's the most useful interpretation.

The referenced "One" is a non issue. There's nothing to fear.

I think an unrepentant sinner who has rejected Christ should fear God and turn and trust Christ. For those who have trusted Christ and are freely, utterly and eternally saved, we have no reason to fear.

18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.
10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4
