Why be an atheist?

Is it really true that atheists are atheists because they can't stand the moral and lifestyle limitations that belief might impose upon them? Or is that an utter misunderstanding of the reasons why someone would be an atheist? If so, why is it popular to say that atheists are atheists because they don't want to be constrained by the moral and lifestyle standards of believers?

Why are some people nonbelievers of Zeus, Odin or Ra? Is it because they don't want to be constrained by the lifestyle choices of those believers?

You know, I hear that Dionysus/Bacchus throws some really wicked parties... sign me up!

They think too much.
There can be no greater compliment -- and, conversely, there can be no greater evil than the condemnation of thought as a bad thing: That dangerous claim is the single constant behind every single one of mankind's humanitarian crises.

Thinking is an application of logic and reason to determine facts related to reality. Logic is a method of non-contradictory identification. Non-contradictory identity (along with consciousness and existence) is one of the three self-evident truths of reality on which all other truths are based. In short, thinking is the only link we have between the formless fantasy world of our own irrational design, and the relevant, salient, truthful facts of reality.

'Too much thinking' is synonymous with 'too much truth.' Calling 'too much truth' a bad thing is irresponsible lunacy.

I believe people are atheists because they can't have faith in something with no evidence. Something that's becoming more and more common in the "prove it" society we have. Somehow I don't think that's a bad thing. :)

Eucharist...you won't be winning any respect with that sort of tone :(. Instead of discussing, the atheists will simply write you off. If somebody told me I only held my position because I was ignorant, I know that's pretty much what I'd do.

Heh, heh--If someone can give me a good reason not to be atheist, I just might take them up on it.

I do hope Eucharist comes back....he/she/it makes me laugh. ;)

I'm certainly not an atheist because I don't like the theist "lifestyle". In fact, there are so many theists in the world--Hindus, Muslims, Lutherans, Baptists--that I don't think it's possible to group them all together and claim they all have the same "lifestyle". I personally think the lifestyle of being selfless, kind to others, generous, forgiving, etc. is a redeeming aspect of Christianity.

People are capable of weaving wild fantasies about anthropomorphic/anthropopathic projections that abrogate natural law, willingly twist their collective intellect into apologetic pretzels in an effort to rationize these tales, but can't seem to understand why someone might defer belief in the absence of evidence. Go figure ...

Ignorance is the lack of knowledge.
Stupidity is the inability to gain knowledge.

Ignorance can be fixed.
Stupidity can only be tolerated. Sometimes with great effort.

oh my qoute is on your signature Linwood...too cool!!

oh right...being an atheist......because during contemplation of ones existance no rational theory existed with enough measure to hold on to the belief of a higher power that interacts in ones world but is completly elusive of detection and unable to be evidenced.
