Why do non Christians constantly take Jesus's Name in vain ?

I constantly see this in movies and video games and in general conversation what is the reason for this ? Is it just a simple Hatred of Christianity or something more ?

What about when someone stubs their toe or drops a cub of coffee?

The JFC term pops up all over the place. It cracks me up when I hear it.

I think it has become just a term like 'OH SH't' that has become acceptable

The language people use, including expletives, is part of the culture. People grow up hearing different words and phrases in different contexts, and then it becomes part of their active vocabulary. If non-Christians use Jesus' name in vain, I would see that as an indication of Christianity's influence on the language and culture overall.

How else can one get a non religious to invoke holy names in times of duress and crisis instead of those Goddamn heathen utterances?

It's funny how they never take Buddha's name in vain, nor Muhammad's, nor Vishnu's......

Yet such people are seldom Christians so it's not as if they are crying out to their God or whatever

I think it is mostly habit and not because of hatred… but ultimately inspired by the adversary, Satan who does hate YHWH. We never hear someone taking Buddha’s name in vain.

Mark Twain said people used it when he was a kid. It's just easy to say I guess, especially with H as the middle name. My friend got scared and uttered, "Jesus Murphy!" That made me chuckle. Supposedly swear words help alleviate pain. Who knew?

I dunno.

Buddhadammit has some potential, but Jesus Christ, it's too long a word.

I've successfully trained myself to say 'Bhagavan' and 'Bhadrakāli,' which are the vocative forms of those names. My co-workers very likely have no idea what I'm saying.

Most of the people you hear saying this are Christians. Steven Pinker gets into some of the psychology of swearing here, but the basic gist is that profanity needs shock value to serve its intended purpose, and this is usually best achieved by tapping into people's feelings of offense (e.g. religious profanity) or disgust (e.g. profanity related to bodily functions).

Christians do it so much that it became part of the culture and some non-Christians picked it up, but it loses a lot if its purpose in a non-Christian audience.

My impression is that it is just not usual to teach people to care very much about using Christian expressions of wonder, surprise or strong emotion. They are taught independently of actual religion or beliefs, and avoiding their use can be socially cumbersome.

We need a new swear word!

As I enjoy making up nonsense words so I suggest "Agiamativi"

I just made it up right now

And the good thing about this is that you can say it and nobody will know that its exact meaning is tremendously obscene ;)

"Oh Agiamativi!"

It amazes me that porn, the least Christian movie genre, almost always has a woman (or several of them…) moan “oh God”.

Then again, I never watched Buddhist porn. Are they different?

It's probably aimed at the bible belt, an area known hor its prolific use of porn.

As it happens I've cried "oh god" on occasion, not in any way a call to a god but rather to appreciate my lover.

Movies and video games simply try to be realistic. People use swear words, so media use them too.

or something more ?

No, less.

Guess why "don't use god's name in vain" was included in the bible in the first place? Because people did just that. And guess what... they didn't give a damn what the authorities said, and kept expressing themselve whichever way they liked.

And that is all there is to it.
