Why is it necessary to believe?

Many religions claim that in order for you to ascend to heaven or whatever sacred paradise beyond the living world, you must believe and follow the word of god/allah/zeus/etc...

I just have a few questions.

1.) If someone lives in some remote part of the world and has never, ever heard of god or Jesus or any religion for that matter but lives their life with reverance for others and good morals, does that mean that that person would go to hell when they die? Wouldn't that be unnecessary? Unneeded?

2.) Wouldn't that god/supreme being(s) be cruel and unreasonable if they did this? Wouldn't that god be thought of as incredibly wrong to deal out eternal punishment just because you simply don't believe in him?

3.) Why is it imperative that we believe what god and his holy scriptures say? Why can't we just live a good life, live a moral life? Why won't god accept us if we're athiests yet we didn't kill, steal, rape, etc...?

I think it depends on where you might be getting your information from. Many athiests do not believe in GOD but another part of atheism (besides the part of non-belief) is the recognition of not relying on GOD or having any need for GOD. I think GOD understands this.

People will need to K(NOW) and UNDERSTAND their own beliefs in their own time.

Do not sacrifice yourself or your spiritual or creative potential out of fear that I will disapprove. For no matter what you do, you will not offend ME…

Don't live in fear of what people tell you in MY name. Live for the TRUTHS you have acquired and adopted for yourself, ones you have PROVEN to work for you in your name.

Many people think that a belief in GOD is like breathing air. If you don't have this belief, you will die. Though atheists may not have disproven the existence of GOD yet, atheists are living proof that a belief and understanding of GOD is not necessary to their physical existence.

No, are you saying that god is a being or a force?

God is a force. God the being is the concept created by man.

Since I'm not quite reaching you, I'll just say this: the most accurate description of God I've seen from a modern piece is the Living Force from Star Wars.

I'm not entirely sure what the RC church says, but i think that if you didn't know, well then, it depends. :sarcastic That's God's choice. But i think you at least have a good chance of going to heaven. Oh, and i think God is a force that has conciousness... ? I dunno. :D I guess i just don't perfectly understand God. Oh well. :ignore: Peace!

:sorry1: sorry about the name confusion RiverWOLF

It's okay. :D

May I ask, what is your reason for believing this?

It makes sense to me.

But my beliefs are always changing, as I learn more.

I grew up in an agnostic household without any sort of teaching as to WHAT to believe, so I created my own religion. I started out with a belief system that was structured around elements and sometimes characters from video games and movies. I also had elements from Greek mythology, which I started learning about in sixth grade, and some Zen Buddhist elements when my dad started practicing it. From the start, I had believed that every god ever worshiped exists, and that the Christian God, whom I knew little about at the time, was one of them.

I adapted from Greek mythology the concept of Gaia, which is one of the few elements from those days that I still believe. (Just as we are a collection of living cells, I believe we are Gaia's cells.) As I grew and learned more about religions (and especially after the teachers started pushing education about Islamic customs after 9/11, which happened when I was in eighth grade,) my own evolved. I slowly relinquished the elements that were derived from video games, and in high school, later came up with the concept of The One, which was literally Everything that ever was, is, and will be. Recently, I finally decided to just call The One God, because it was easier, and I learned fit nearly every description of God.

Eventually I started really studying religions, especially after joining these forums and being chided for my lack of knowledge, which at the time was primarily based on History Channel documentaries, by Jayhawker Soule. I am now currently studying religions as a passtime.

I'm also currently reading (more than once) the Upanishads and Bhagavad-Gita, and I'm finding that Vedanta agrees with much of what I believe. I'm currently considering converting to a form of Vedanta, though I haven't fully decided yet.

Now... if you want to know WHY I eventually came up with my own religion... I don't remember. :angel2: But it's helped me a great deal, so I don't regret it.

Because the middle men (priests, clerics, messiahs, prophets) wouldn't have any power over others otherwise.

"God the being" is an attempt by the human mind to make sense of things, and I do not believe such a being exists externally.

The Monistic God-concept is the only one that actually sounds like it could exist. But you should know as well as I do that there is no such thing as objective evidence when it comes to God-concepts.
