There is generally a reluctance to accept that humans with all their attainments need to bow to a superior entity.

I think this is more to the truth of it. The atheist's "God" is their own presumed ability to know the 'truth of it all'. So they don't need to grapple with the great mystery of existence, or the fear of their own limitations and vulnerability, or to seek a transcendence of self through the conceptual mechanism of a God or gods. They already see themselves as complete; ready and able and in control, through the power of their own intellect.

The pressure as you call it is illusion.There is no pressure to believe in God or be religious. That's a victim construct that some atheists, or anti-theists, will employ in order to excuse their offensive agenda's toward theists. Particularly Christians.
FFRF is one example of an organized effort in that regard. Headed by a former evangelical pastor, FFRF's agenda is to eradicate any evidences of the Christian faith from the secular landscape.

That's why living a moral life is so important to each of us individually, because by taking care of the people around us we are taking care of ourselves.
