The Prince of wales and his family is supported by the income from his own estates.
The queen supports a number of junior royals out of her own estate income.
Those that are supported by the state are in compensation for official duties.
The public royal estate is funded by the nation, but would need to be so Royalty or not. However The queen does use her own funds for many Projects including the rebuilding of much of the fire damage at Windsor castle.

I rather doubt the President ever dips into his own pocket for anything and seems to have put most of his family on to the Pay roll too.

It is true that the UK has become less reliant on trade with the USA as much of the traditional supply chain and trade has moved to China India the far and middle east. the USA is becoming more and more redundant as a trading partner...
