Why Krishna is Blue

Vishnu is usually depicted as blue or blue-black. I'd always heard that, as an incarnation of Vishnu, Krishna displayed a dilute version of Vishnu's complexion.

He He .... Krsna in his more esoteric forms to his dearest devotees appears in his wonderfully deepest blue black form ...

but to avoid the evil king Kamsa He has to appear as a normal child ....so he is depicted in these pastimes as gently tinged with blue ....

strangely enough apart from Balaji , vishnu is simmilarly depected as paler blue ,

something prehaps to do with our need to normalise things ?

Are we really arguing about which color is the Supreme Brahman ?

I'll just back off from this tread now and keep going on with my duties to realize it without wasting time arguing.
The topic was not started by me. Brahman is perhaps Nirguna, but there is Saguna Brahman also. Everyone accepts that Brahman can assume any form, any color (nama-rupa). My interest is basically historical. Sure, if you think the topic is uninteresting, leave it at that. There are topics in which I too do not participate.

Jai Sri Krishna.

Krishna is supposed to be a poornavatara, Seyorni, with all 16 attributes. No question of dilution, IMHO.

with all 16 attributes. No question of dilution,

jai jai , no queation of dilution , no question at all .

as you say all atributes , ...so krsna is fullness ,

Krsna is the eternal , the all pevaiding ,

of the elements he is Ether - space, (which is dark blue )

from that ether he manifests Air - gases...... Fire - heat of transformation.........Water- liquids........and ...Earth - solids....

he pervades as he is the pure spirit , the source of all creation .
from him all consciousness and matter manifests ....

therefore each other god has the colour of an atribute or energy , Krsna has depth , the colour of the cosmic universe which manifests all .

and if we look to the the ayurveda ....we will find the qualitys of Ether described thus ...Freedom , Peace , Expansion of Consciousness .
Love and Compassion .

and Separation .

and of the chakras Indigo is the third eye......

IMHO.Beautiful pictures. Thanks, Ratikala.

Krishna is painted as blue. One of his names, Shyam, simply means blue, the blue one. His representation as blue is a symbol that he is a love God, that he represents love and the depth of the inner soul. Osho

Shyama (http://spokensanskrit.de/): black, dark blue, dark-coloured, dark blue or brown or grey or green, sable (dark brown), dark, having a dark or swarthy complexion, dark green.

Since human skin is not blue, grey or green. You find these colors only in the film 'Avatara'. Cancelling out these colors we get:

black, dark-coloured, sable (dark brown - deep tan), dark, having a dark or swarthy complexion. - which are the normal Indian skin-colors.

Skin color of Vishnu avataras is also mentioned as Ghana-shyama (color of rain-laden clouds, which I will describe as dusky). IMHO, blue is not correct. 'Neela' also means a dark color. They were certainly not whites (except for Shiva about whom I am not sure. Perhaps he turned fairer because of being associated with Rudra, the ruddy-one). :)

It is never blue, always 'Ghanashyam' - the color of rain laden clouds. Faulty source.Agree. You are right.

My source is about why he is depicted as blue. I, and most, do know that he was closer to black in colour. Or as you said, specifically like a dark rain cloud.

I liked Madhuri's view about blue color. But I have something different view.

Krishna was/is never blue. Puranas clearly says that Krishna has a Dark color. That's why his name is krishna - Dark. Krishna is blueish Dark having dark in more quantity.

Have you ever seen a blueish dark cloud in sky ? A roaring, silent, fearfull, beautiful, all attractive ! Exactly like that he is ! Krishna has a blackish lustre which is the representation of maya by which krishna appears in form. He is always covered by Maya for Ignorants. The knowers of Brahman see him endless, formless and self of all beings. They know another krishna who is NirguNa and beyond form and unseen.

This is what I feel about krishna's Blue - Dark color.

Hari Krishna... :)

Friends,

The color blue also reflects in

The term 'BLUE BLOOD' comeing from:
1. royal or aristocratic descent

[C19: translation of Spanish sangre azul ]
2. deoxygenated blood is more of a blue color compared to oxygenated blood .

Vishnu is depicted blue in color in puranas and since Krishna and Rama are declared as incarnation of Vishnu so they are often shown blue. :)

I'm getting the distinct impression that very few people actually read the OP.
