Why should cats be allowed to run free to kill birds and crap on my garden?

Ferel cats (chats errant) were rife around out village. On several occasions (before i moved to france) the council hired hunters for an annual cull. I intervened and suggest trapping the cats and paying for them to be neutered (i would have paid but the council took responsibility). It worked, 6 years later we are seeing a decrease in chats errant. And with an arrangement with a local vet it works out cheaper than paying for a cull every year.

Yes the Issue is irresponsible owners. They do not do the right thing.

Here there is very little control over indiscriminate breeding of pets, despite trying to educate a small population since the early 1990's to be responsible for their pets.

I live remote in Australia, the cats in the outback are in plague numbers. That is the issue with poor pet ownership. I had to clean a house of cats once a long time ago after the occupants were evicted, the cats were basically feral in this house, living in the cupboards, doing theor business wherever they wanted to, there was over 15 cats and as wild as I have ever seen them.

It was the most distressing job I have ever had being an animal control officer, it was then I learnt there are very few really good pet owners. Some of those that think they are good, fall way short of their pets needs.

Then it may be I spoil our pets too much.

Yes they probably do,the size of a robin or sparrows poo is a pee in the ocean compared to a cats, further, birds tend to poo on a fence or tree or roof, they do not mess my herb garden up then dump on it,cats crap stinks too and many cats have worms,do I really want that in my fresh herbs I cook with?,no so the cat has to be persuaded to Relocate.

No probably about it. And i think pee in the ocean is something of an exaggeration.

Oh i am sure birds poo on your herb garden, and also have worms, enjoy.

But consider the lack of mice or rats messing up your herb garden, a bonus eh?

But if you are so determined to rid your garden of gods maybe something like this will help

They were considered gods and have not forgotten.

No a short sharp shock is not the solution, all that will happen is the cat will avoid you and crap on your precious garden when you are not there.

Jeez, you want to deter cats but for free, damn you are dedicated.

Your garden - your choice, im done

They will be reminded that they not, anyway they are reprieved as the repellant seems to be working, apparently cats hate lavender which I put essence of on the garden,I will plant the tall variety in the borders.

Living in south west France we have plenty of lavender, one of the few plants that take to my not so green fingers. The cats love it, two will actually bury their head in the leaves and treat it like catnip, so don't rely on it as a deterrent,

Well maybe you have weird cats as it’s recommended as a deterrent but the soaker is on stand by and that is tried and tested and definitely works,we’ll see

I just finished a garden project of a brick built planter,I filled it with compost and topsoil and started to plant herbs,to my horror there was a pile of cat crap on it.

I’ve had a run in with this cat already,I gave him a warning shot with a stone, slow to learn he will get a soaking when I next see him,I don’t see why cats are allowed out at all, they should be kept inside, agreed?.
Have you seen this video? A man has trouble with squirrels and builds an AI powered water canon to keep them out of the garden. Its real, and you can do the same thing to keep cats out of your yard. The canon learns to identify one species and shoots water only at that one species, so it doesn't attack birds or humans.

Why do you want to imprison what is essentially a wild animal.
Because the toll cats take on small mammals, songbirds, and small reptiles is immense. I've been a part of some of the studies that attempt to quantify all that, and it's terrible. It's amazing too to see cat owners reaction upon finding out that their dear little Fluffy goes around killing things for no real reason. They'll swear up and down that, oh no not MY little Fluffy! She's well fed, so she doesn't need to kill birds!

Then we put a "critter cam" on the cat and later show the owner the video of Fluffy raiding a robin nest and killing all the chicks. Then later that week it goes across the street and hunts chipmunks Oh, and they only bring home about 1 out of 4 things they kill, so most owners are completely oblivious to what Fluffy is really doing.

And that's just pet cats. Feral cats are much, much worse.

From a native wildlife conservation standpoint, domestic (they are not "essentially a wild animal") cats are a massive problem.

Yet cats have been around for 20 or 30 million years and have been part of the cycle of life and death for all that time. And we know to our own experience the problems caused by disturbing that cycle. In my own part of the world bears and wild cats are being reintroduced in an effort to repair the eco system.

Not domestic cats, and not in the way they exist today (in terms of numbers, range, mobility, etc.).

and have been part of the cycle of life and death for all that time. And we know to our own experience the problems caused by disturbing that cycle. In my own part of the world bears and wild cats are being reintroduced in an effort to repair the eco system.
We're not talking about wild cats. We're talking about domestic cats that are either outdoor pets or feral.

Why do you want to imprison what is essentially a wild animal. Cats were around long before humans, we are the interlopers in there territory. All sounds kind of selfish to me

Because they are a destructive nuisance that kill for no reason often tormenting it’s victim before getting bored, spray stuff and crap on other peoples gardens rather than their own and have been known to cause accidents.
