"Why Wiccans Suck" article

Ugh. Just ugh. That's all I can say about anyone who brands an entire group together. I particularly didn't like the condescending nature of it. "(Wow, you finally read a book? Maybe two, even?)"

I did manage to get through the article to the bottom of the page, wherein the disclaimer states
"I REPEAT:
I have no problem with Wicca.
It's the Wiccans I can't stand."

That's nice. Right about as non-biased as "I have no problem with Christianity. It's the Christians I can't stand."

I don't claim to be Wiccan and never have, but I can't see this as anything other than anger.

I read that site years ago..mabye 4 years agoish and I found/find a lot of wisdom. Every person with a belief system has a motive that creates their "belief engine" and he is articulating on some of the sore spots of the Wiccian practiners. I live in Austin and wicca is very strong here. I have personally met dozens of wiccians in the last 10 years and have to say by a far it is such a peacful caring loving religion but I have noticed a bit of eveyrthing he has mentioned in there.

The quanity is severly dimished to what one might expect given the emotion tied to the article but still present nonetheless.

What I carried away from the article is that every faith is made up of believers with varying motitives in that faith and the motives do not change from faith to faith only the faiths.

Just as people find Christian fundies who are drastic and Muslism who propogate hate on behalf of Allah Wiccians have their small share of "fundies" who have used their conversion as a tool to further a personal cause or manufacuted "verbal battle".

The nice thing though is that the most extreme of any Wiccian you will meet will at worst have a sharp tounge and an abrasive personality as opposed to a Muslim or Christian with a gun and a death wish.

It is what happens when we start defining things too much , IMHO. The more one defines what something is , the more they define what it is not , if that makes any sense ? Anyway , one ends up in a very small world ....

It is like my "is religion like a toy" theory. When we start putting definitions on things, we start to put more emphasis on the tiny details to bring out our selfishness, greed, and hatred.

("This person doesn't know what they're talking about, so I shouldn't take it seriously," "This doesn't apply to me, just those OTHER people," "Ha! They just contradicted themselves, they must be Christian!")

And for now a side rant -- You know what? I AM TALKING ABOUT YOU.
Anyone who comes to this webpage
intending to snicker at how wrong it is
or to get angry at the Stupid Fundie
is one of the people I'm talking about. Do I mention crystal-hugging New Age
mental case flakes on this page
a n y w h e r e ? NO.
And yet, people keep mentioning them.
"Agreeing" with me, for God's sake...
-- too dense to realize that
I'm talking about THEM.
And if we respond to this then we condemn ourselves to being wrong and exactly what he is talking about??? Nice Catch 22 in my opinion.
Hate language is right. Just sounds to me like they believed themselves to be the only "true Wiccan they knew of and thusly decided to rebel against it as a whole. What immaturity.

I used to be Wiccan. Used to be. It's important to note that I moved on to other things a few years ago. And below are a few of the reasons why I left.

The article reminds me very much of the punk-rock purists/elitists who moved on "coz the scene's a dump man, it's like, all these kids, and sell-outs, and posers who think they're punk but they're like SOOOOOOO not". In punk-rock anyone who;
a) makes money
b) wears fashionable gear
c) can dance

Is labeled by the purists as the enemy.

Anyway, why would you drop your religious beliefs because a few people misunderstand?

You deserve many frubals for that, but I have to spread them around first. :(

I've seemed to be dealing with this a lot lately (well actually it's the indie rockers, or whatever you call them, but same thing) but never thought of how well it fits in with the way Wicca is.

Sort of a "How can you like that band? They're total sellouts!"
"Why?"
"Because they're popular!"
"But they're good..."

When someone doesn't want to call themselves Wicca, because of all the bad sterotypes that come with it, but in reality, isn't that in itself perpetuating the sterotypes? I mean, if there's no good example...

End pointless rambling.

Isn't it great to know that there is always an abundance of dumb, small-minded people in the world? It's nice to know that there are some things we can always count on.

From his FAQ page:

""Not ALL Wiccans suck! I know some really nice Wiccans! You can't group them all together like that!!!" No, not ALL Wiccans suck. I've split them into two groups [fluff bunnies and Wiccans that actually know their religion] on the front page, if you'd bother to read it -- just because I'm sick of getting this comment in my email. For more on this topic, read the question below, and you'll understand."

Though he's harsh and biting, some of what he says is valid. He is not dissing all Wiccans. He's dissing the teenagers who take up Wicca to **** off their parents and don't know anything about the religion.

Thanks for that, Jensa. If I'd been directed to the front page (or completely read the FAQ, which I should have done), I would've seen that, and not been bothered at all.

Because I try to look for the good in people, MD_88, I'll imagine that that's what you were referring to.

And there is a big difference ? Where ?

Sorry C1 and others who see these people as doing more harm then good , but everyone has to start somewhere . This all goes back to Buckland , or perhaps even farther ? Many thought that he moved too slow . Many thought that he was right , taking his time and only accepting those who proved their desire to follow Gardner's teachings . Fair enough . Each are entitled to their opinions . But I ask , isn't this what happens when a religion gets too formal ? Look at other religions and how they have broken into sects . Is that what Wiccans want for their religion ?

It's not a matter of it breaking up into sects, it's a matter of knowing where Wicca originated and its history, the good and the bad, before prancing around and calling oneself a Wiccan.

Which is why I don't like tags Jensa . :) Please don't get me wrong here . I do understand the concerns about getting the correct image across . But isn't that something any group faces ? Like I said , everyone has to start somewhere .
