When what plate was passed?

Plate with the bread and wine used 1 X a year. ( if I recall right?)
If I remember accurately those that took the sacraments were of the chosen
144,000 that will go to "heaven" and oversee the affairs on this Earth with Jesus.
No one could ever explain to me how those chosen 144,000 knew they were
chosen?
It was considered impolite to ask one such chosen how they knew they were chosen.
It was almost superstitious to ask such a thing.
Anyone have an idea of how the 144,000 "chosen" know that they are chosen?
An interesting article on the J.W. version of the 144,000.

I think they do not know that they are chosen. The reason? It is because the very scriptures which they say can not be changed SAY that a person is saved when he or she endures to the end. Matthew 24:13
Nobody knows who will and who won't endure.
Also, the 144,000 are ALWAYS referred to as a heavenly host. How can someone be of the 144,000 before they die? It is not possible.

@jeager106 Please allow me to fix your story for you. It might be true that someone saw cigarettes in someone's purse, but it wasn't at the memorial when the plate is passed* and it wasn't when a basket would be passed for a donation. It might have been when the lady donated something at the donation box in the back.

*we should sure hope not as that day is the most important day for all JWs and always it is a most solemn occasion. I should think that nobody would be busy doing something in her purse at that time.

I agree Ms. wind.
As in ALL religions much is hard to prove as little is based on facts.
Religion is all about Faith and that is an elusive quality.
Can anyone prove that a "god" even exists?
Untold millions have died in one form or another as a direct result of a faith that
can't be proved nor disproved.
Not all that long ago I heard on local news about a young chap and friend who were
walking home from a bible study.
Two armed thugs attempted to rod them with a firearm.
One faithful victim held his bible in front of him shouting " In the name of Jesus
your gun won't fire!"
The bullet went right through the book and through the victim who later died.
There is faith then there is stupidity!
Lesson?
Carry a very thick, large, Bible!:shrug:
.....and I reserve the right to be wrong. No one has a perfect memory and we all see
"facts" differently.
Ergo why we have tens of thousands of different Christian denominations ALL reading
the SAME BOOK.

I think he said the wrong words. Maybe if he said, "In the name of Jesus your bullet won't kill me" it might have turned out better for him.

Good lord! Forgive me for thinking it is funny.

claiming they are the one and TRUE interpretation of the Bible.
What gall to believe ONE denomination is the one and only TRUE pathway to
"god" or heaven or eternal life or whatever.
How many Churches of Christ are there? Each with a different dogma yet sharing
the came church name and reading the SAME BOOK!?
Which one is the one and only TRUE pathway to never never land?

http://www.answers.com/Q/How_many_Christian_denominations_are_there

About FORTY ONE THOUSAND denominations.
Really?

Of course that would not work when someone is trying to rob us, what did Jesus say?

Luke 6:27-30 (ESVST) 27 " But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back.

"Why (did) my J.W. friends left this site?"

From my research, including http://www.ldsfreedomforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=18351 , I think the egocentricity of the governing body with their penchance for excommunication has a role to play in this phenomenon.

In the context of the parable of all meats being equal it is egocentricity that separates us from God-bear with me...As the primal force in the universe we know God is ancient and we accept that customs of latter day communities wont put up with the antics of 'primitives'; So we expect God to conform to our ways.

Being open to "all meats" is a tough row to hoe, and our egocentricity and regard for our brethren's peace of mind tends to our isolation as we go spinning off into space like a universe unto ourselves.

I construed this after reading Savagewind's "how are the men of the governing body "least" of Jesus' brothers?"

This is the reason I don't belong to any "religion". The Bible says that the Holy Spirit will teach us all things, He is my ultimate Teacher. I listen to a few different human teachers, but I always test what they teach and rely on the Holy Spirit to show the truth.

What we encounter can effect us if we allow it to "enter our hearts".

By letting it go "out in the draught" we can continue to be open to the possibility that God is communing with us without closing off.

Sharing the company of a designer of the universe would have some effects counter to our ideas of what is 'pleasant' simply due to a difference in culture.

True. A wise person will consider what he or she will allow into his or her heart. I did not jump at the chance to be a JW for everlasting life. I considered it a way to know Jehovah and I think I was right.

Interesting. I think I might like to hear more about that as I do not know what you are saying.

That is a lot to take in and I agree. The second part, "due to a difference in culture" deserves its own thread, I think.

By letting the antics of 'people with guns' go by without 'letting it into our hearts' and arming ourselves, we've let it go.

I do not agree with you. I might have a gun, but God knows I don't know how to shoot it, and I would worry about who I might shoot.
I have not let into my heart that someone might shoot me. Why would anyone let into their heart that they might get shot someday?

I feel as if Jehovah has given me the same kind of protection. I won't let the opposers get away with their hatchet job. My house is firm and unmovable....built on a solid foundation. I will defend the truth and expose the lies.

Like the hatchet job of bringing this "truth" to "light"?

Preservation 1932 pp 193-194
By his spirit, the holy spirit, Jehovah God guides or leads his people up to a certain point of time, and thus he did until the time when "the comforter" was taken away, which would necessarily occur when Jesus, the Head of his organization, came to the temple and gathered unto himself those whom he found faithful when he, as the great Judge, began his judgment, in 1918.

After the holy spirit as an advocate or paraclete ceased to function in behalf of the consecrated, then the angels are employed in behalf of those who are being made ready for the kingdom.

The GB teach that the Holy Spirit "ceased" to function and was "taken away" in 1918, and then angels were employed to lead God's people. Then they teach,

*** w02 3/15 p. 15 par. 11 Christ Leads His Congregation ***
11 Our Leader is perfect. The men he has given as gifts are not. So they may err at times. Yet, it is vital that we remain loyal to Christ’s arrangement. In fact, living up to our dedication and baptism means that we recognize the legitimacy of spirit-appointed authority in the congregation and willingly submit to it. Our baptism ‘in the name of the holy spirit’ is a public declaration that we recognize the holy spirit and acknowledge the role it plays in Jehovah’s purposes. (Matthew 28:19) Such a baptism implies that we cooperate with the spirit and do nothing to hinder its operation among Christ’s followers. Since the holy spirit plays a vital role in the recommendation and appointment of elders, can we really be faithful to our dedication if we fail to cooperate with the elder arrangement in the congregation?

Is this the kind of "truth" you will defend?

I know this if off topic, but I'm curious. It is my understanding that "the comforter" is the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit was as you say "taken away" in 1918, how in the world does the JW church organization recommend and appoint it's elders by any means led by the Holy Spirit if the Holy Spirit is no longer present?

I think the right question is WHICH truth to defend? The first one or the second one.
I wonder what scripture they used to prove that the holy spirit as an advocate or paraclete ceased to function in behalf of the consecrated?

Maybe we can get a defender of the "truth" to help us understand.

And to clarify, it wasn't me who said it, it was the spirit directed gb that said it. I'm just quoting them.
