Would the world be better off without Christianity?

I'm back!
The world can be better off without organized religion. It disables the people and it forces them to be dependant on ministers and gurus when instead they can forge their own relationship with God (or not) without the silly mandates and say of organized religion.

Interesting point. Like the old adage, "power corrupts", and this is probably true in church-based power, as it is in any other kind of power. Followers love to look up to their leaders, as a man lost in the labyrinth would follow a child carrying a flaming torch (we're paraphrasing Neil Gaiman here). Doing away with "organized" Christianity would definitely monkeywrench the religion's ability to assert political power. Yet if the religion still influenced people's minds as it does now (at least in America), you can bet the religion wouldn't be disorganized for long. It is part of human nature to establish dominance hierarchies; it is part of the nature of memes to link minds. Put those two together and you've still got an organization.
