Actually, we're pretty sure they did exactly that, significantly and continually. Now, this is only a problem if:
We subscribe to a very modern view of the Bible that a small minority of Christians hold.
We also assume that a different group of people, separated by thousands of years and miles...
Everything else aside, the ToE has nothing to do with the origins of life. You're confusing evolution with abiogenesis.
By the by, have you ever checked out TalkOrigins? They've got a goodly collection of articles on the science surrounding the origins of life...
This, mixed with a little creative licence. I'm shallow and I want people to post in my threads. ;)
As for the whole grade thingie; inter-cultural awareness and understanding is always good, but it took me (a fellow limey) all of four seconds to google-check it. It also does state their age in...
Howdy y'all! :)
(I never know how to start-off these thread thingies...)
Anyhow; I was perusing through some of my favourite webcomics, and I realised that I can't be the only one on the internet who enjoys them. Does anyone else here have any webcomics they're fond of and want to share...
Cops: Third-graders arrested in teacher attack plot - CNN.com
Frankly, I'm in full support of anything that helps get our younglings motivated and aware of how their actions can lead to future responsibilities. Any other thoughts?
I vaguely recall saying, a dusty lifetime ago, that for me 'faith' is the process through which the paradoxes of "I" and "Am" are melded. Faith is the crux; Faith is movement.
(Or something like that anyways...)
It still resonates with me, despite (or maybe because of) the fact I have...

Do you know why the 'ancient dragon' is used to symbolise Judaism? It's just that from what I've read of its mythological connotations, it seems to be quite a fascinating 'choice' to have made.
(To wit, the 'ancient dragon'...
This line really rather interests me, given the context. Does this revelation make use of or reference to any other dragonical (dragonesque? dragontastic?) symbolism?
(Oh, and I'm sorry to derail your thread; obviously I can't attempt an answer to the OP. If you want, I'll retract this post...
I think that religion, in all manner of contexts and forms, has often acted as a means of challenging prevailing modes of behaviour within societies and encouraging greater equality and justice within them. Often this has been done through an emphasis on the divine aspect of humanity (We are in...
I've just started The Great Transformation by Karen Armstrong, and after that I'll probably pick up either The Tao of Physics or Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt.

Huzzah for complex and pompously-intellectual-sounding book titles! :D
I think religion is mainly about expressing numinosity and symbolism, oftentimes collectively. I doubt there's reason why asking cannot be a manifestation of this, but I also doubt it's the only one.
I'd suspect that sometimes the being being asked is not the one the person calls and sees as...
Y'know, going to the trouble (however small it may be) to quote my post only to expressly ignore it's contents seems a little counter-intuitive. Can you offer any reasons for why I should accept your conclusions, or even any detail for why you disagree? As you quoted 'em, how would you deal with...
I'm certainly not a Jain, but according to the mighty and jealous goddess Wikipedia (may her citations always lack weasel wording!) the original terms are 'Urdhva Loka' and 'Adho Loka'.
As can be seen by following this link. :)
