My intentions are pretty simple - I am interested in understanding how someone who believes in Sola Scriptura is able to justify that belief in light of various questions. My hope is that we can have a good conversation/debate.
Obviously one of us is wrong in our beliefs - there is only one...
Very well. You should know that I too reject the Gospel of Thomas - and for the EXACT same reason. It contradicts the true Gospel.
But how do you know that the Gospel which we accept is the true Gospel?
Maybe a better question would be this: how did you discover the Gospel the first time...
Yes. And he instructed us to teach, and to be good citizens, etc. Of course, the greatest of all these is love - and this certainly does not fit in directly with our converstation, but I will always take up the opportunity for agreement. :)
I try not to assume anyone ascribe's to Sola...
Absolutely, to teach the Gospel - and no, it has not changed. But the Gospel's tell us to go out and teach the Gospel's, not just hand the Bible to someone and let the Spirit guide them. Christ taught his apostles, and they in turn taught thousands of people, who in turn taught thousands of...
OK...I think I am starting to understand a little more of where at least Paul and NetDoc are coming from...bear with me for a few more questions...
Paul, I am assuming you would reject a gospel of Jesus that is not included in the Bible as we know it today (ex. the Gospel of Thomas). If I am...
I wouldn't disagree with you there in the slightest. Tradition in the sense that Catholics believe is not wrapped up in these accidental details.
Wait, so you simply agree with the books that come in the Bible through divine inspiration? Do you recognize at all the fact that the Bible had to...
I am not saying that the Spirit did not inspire those men to choose the books that make up the Bible. In fact, I would say quite the contrary - I believe wholeheartedly that God worked through those men to give us the Bible.
What I am wondering is whether or not sola scriptura believers...
Yes, God can do anything, but what I am trying to get down to is where the Bible came from in its current form. It didn't just magically appear. At some point some group decided that there were only 4 legitimate Gospels, that only certain books would make up the OT and the NT. It is this...
Interesting - I had honestly not heard it referred to this way before. Allow me a few more questions...
- You say that scripture is the highest form of authority, but agree that there can be authority outside of scripture - is that correct? If that is your point, I don't see how that is...
Getting back to the question that started this thread (I leave for a day and there are suddenly 5 pages of digressions!)...
To those that do believe in sola scriptura - do you know when the Bible took on its current form?
Basing Christian holy days on pagan feast days is a very common occurence. It is similar to Christians taking over pagan temples and making them into churches. There is a symbolism there: a baptism of sorts.
So yes, many Christian holidays do share the dates with pagan holidays. I don't see...
God is not limited by logic as He is the one who created logic in the first place. However, can God microwave a burrito so hot that he can't eat it? Or, more traditionally, can God create a rock so heavy that he cannot lift it?
The answer is no.
The reason for this is simple: God does not...
That is certainly well stated (if not lengthy).
I would really be interested, though, in hearing what some non-Catholics believe in terms of the Bible.
How did the Bible come to be?
What did the Christians do before there was a Bible?
Is the Bible the only guide to know Jesus?
If not, what...
Thanks - I've already seen that there has been some interesting RC related conversations - its just hard to join in after there's been 80+ posts. :) Hopefully we'll get some good topics on RC started.
Before I start posting, I want to make sure my intentions are clear. I am simply looking for good conversation and seeing other people's viewpoints. I am a Roman Catholic and love my faith. I do have a lot of questions about why some protestants believe what they believe.
This particular...
