    Interesting responses so far. Thanks. With the exception of a few theists who have responded, there seems to be an over-representation of atheists on this topic! Is that significant? Perhaps we are not bound by commandments to 'love thy neighbour' as featured in some religions.

    I tend to agree - there seems to be no obvious processing centre in a plant.     My dog can release some real eye-melters, but then so can I. I agree with England above: meat-eaters tend to have worse smelling ones, but us veggies tend to do it more frequently (!).
