I read that you are a magician. I'm interested in that myself and am trying to learn a few tricks. I'm interested in the psychology of magic and illusions (I'm a big fan of Derren Brown) and have just read 'Sleights of Mind' by Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde. Well worth a read if you...
This is true, but I was responding to Riverwolf's opening sentence:
"I just learned about the plant research of the Indian scientist J. C. Bose, which basically seems to indicate that plants have a nervous system much like animals do, able to feel pain and react to stimuli, for example."...
Interesting responses so far. Thanks.
With the exception of a few theists who have responded, there seems to be an over-representation of atheists on this topic! Is that significant? Perhaps we are not bound by commandments to 'love thy neighbour' as featured in some religions.
Thanks, Outhouse. Gene duplication and it's effects is taught in high school biology. This thread makes me wonder what some people actually get taught in school.
Read up on gene duplication for info on both novel genes and functions. Start with this Wiki, then follow some of the references:
"The duplication of a gene results in an additional copy that is free from selective pressure. One kind of view is that this allows the new copy of the gene to...

I'm hoping this thread may bring a few more out of the woodwork and perhaps provide their reasons.
I basically see humans as an arrogant blight on this planet and if we cause our own extinction (by whatever means), then so be it, but I object to us pulling the rest of Nature down with us...
I've been thinking about my views on humans lately, and I'm curious as to what others may make of them.
I am not a great fan of my species. I love and like certain individuals but, as a whole, people depress me. If I watch the news and there is an article about human cruelty and suffering and...
I tend to agree - there seems to be no obvious processing centre in a plant. There is no doubt that plants respond to certain stimuli (such as light, chemicals etc) and that they have receptors to detect such stimuli, but there is no evidence for a processing centre ("brain", if you like) that...
My dog can release some real eye-melters, but then so can I. I agree with England above: meat-eaters tend to have worse smelling ones, but us veggies tend to do it more frequently (!).
