The Old Testament - Sell It To Me!

If you wanted to promote Christianity I don't understand why you would focus on the Old Testament, when the distinctive ideas of Christianity come from the New Testament.

NATO chief says Donald Trump puts US troops, allies at risk by saying Russia can 'do whatever the hell they want' with them

There are no such members. There are members that do not contribute the 2% of GDP that was agreed as a guideline in 2006: https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_67655.htm The founding principle of NATO is that an attack on any member will be treated as attack on all. Thus for example an...

NATO chief says Donald Trump puts US troops, allies at risk by saying Russia can 'do whatever the hell they want' with them

OK on that I agree with you. And also, I've no doubt Putin will not take Trump's wild statement at face value. He will be well aware that US government is a collective business. The US president can't act like a medieval absolute monarch. Nevertheless it indicates a clear direction of travel of...

    Who here believes in "Scientism"?

My position on scientism? I think it is what happens when a person tries to use science to do more than it is intended for and to overclaim its utility. Science is for understanding and predicting the natural world. But human experience does not consist only of experience of nature. There are...

Egypt Threatens to Suspend Key Peace Treaty if Israel Pushes into Rafah on Its Border, Officials Say

Symbolism is important in many religions. You may consider it stupid, but your religion may look just as stupid to others as theirs may do to you. Labelling it stupid will do nothing to lessen its importance to the people involved.

    Why So Much Trinity Bashing?

It seems to be a hobby of some of the JWs we have around here, as an alternative to parading deliberate misunderstandings of science.

    Celebrity crush?

Oooooooh. I've just looked them up on the web. Bit different from the Bach I had in mind, but I bet they played JSB in private - most decent musicians do. Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Procul Harum even included some in their performed music.

    Celebrity crush?

Oh dear, have I just had a "Who Are the Beatles, Judge Asks" moment?:D Is there someone called just Sebastian Bach, then? Who he?

NATO chief says Donald Trump puts US troops, allies at risk by saying Russia can 'do whatever the hell they want' with them

Are you really telling me the invasion of Afghanistan after 911 and of Iraq was nothing to do with the president?

Egypt Threatens to Suspend Key Peace Treaty if Israel Pushes into Rafah on Its Border, Officials Say

Well it does look increasingly like an ethnic cleansing strategy. Reduce Gaza to rubble, herd the population up against the border with Egypt, then attack the very place they have been herded into, in the hope that Egypt will be forced to open its border on humanitarian grounds so that the whole...

NATO chief says Donald Trump puts US troops, allies at risk by saying Russia can 'do whatever the hell they want' with them

This is tantamount to saying the president is unable to determine the military posture of the US., because the real power resides in the military. That might be true in Pakistan but it is not true of the USA. Sure, he would be advised against tearing up the NATO pact, but even leaving it in...

NATO chief says Donald Trump puts US troops, allies at risk by saying Russia can 'do whatever the hell they want' with them

Very insightful. However, it is catastrophically irresponsible statesmanship for a US presidential candidate to telegraph publicly, to a very threatening enemy, that NATO may not function as advertised in the event of an attack on a member state. As for the old "What's in it for us?" question...

    I like Nikki 3.0

So not Trump, then? That's something at least. I'm not a fan of Haley's politics, but she is at least sane and talks rationally about issues. She's clearly able and articulate. You would not catch her publicly undermining critical international military alliances or encouraging despots.

    Celebrity crush?

Hehe, who knows. She's fashion model with Roman so it could be all put on for the camera. But one can imagine. When I was a young man, back in the early 1980s, I was very much in love with a tall, willowy girl with hair a bit like hers - perhaps that's why she appeals to me.

    Celebrity crush?

No, because Luzia I see all the time, to remind me how lovely she is, whereas I last saw Kidman years ago. Just to remind you, here is Luzia again:-

    Celebrity crush?

Thinking more about it, there is one actual celebrity that I could sort of have a crush on: Nicole Kidman. Such an able and versatile actress and beautiful in an interesting way, i.e. not just one of those bland blondes with a toothpaste grin.

    Celebrity crush?

JSB is an interesting choice. He was quite a man, certainly. I was amused to read he was once so rude to a trumpeter that the man lay in wait for him and attacked him in the street, whereupon Bach drew his sword(!) and they had to be separated, causing him to get into some trouble with the town...

    Your Epitaph

Mine is already done, as I shall be buried with my deceased wife. At the top it has the neumes and text of the last line of "Attende Domine", a Lenten Gregorian hymn that we both liked, which says: "Quos redemisti, tu conserva, Christe", which means "Those whom you have redeemed, keep safe, O...

Human ‘behavioural crisis’ at root of climate breakdown, say scientists

As far as the science goes, the controversy about the basic process and its consequences is over. Only a few eccentric and contrarian scientists still dispute that. There is of course dispute in some of the details but nothing that challenges the basic idea. There is also little political...
