I have more reason to believe satan is telling the truth than I do Jesus. Look at how many lies Jesus tells in the gospels. See my thread "Four failed prophecies of Jesus".
Acts does NOT mention Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew, Jude, or Matthias. Please tell us how you know where they went or if they even left Jerusalem and how they died. If you cannot then please explain why I hear every apologist under the sun say, "The apostles were willing to die...
This is a philosophical type of question. I'm only interested in what can or cannot be proved right now and on the basis of lack of evidence for Jesus it is reasonable to conclude Jesus never rose.
But can you trust the stories about him? They were written by Greeks 50-100 years after he died and they didn't even know him--certainly never heard him speak.
Yes, 65 years after the fact and Josephus wasn't an eyewitness, he was just repeating hearsay he heard. At best it might prove he heard talk about somebody called Jesus.
I have researched and researched some more the fate of the apostles in the secular record and have not been able to find anything.
In the Bible, Jesus Christ names 12 apostles to spread his gospel, and the early Christian church owes its rapid rise to their missionary zeal. Yet, for most of...
Not to mention how can a physical body supposedly composed of flesh and bone (but no blood naturally ;)) inhabit a spiritual realm? The whole thing doesn't make a bit of sense.
The NT didn't come into existence until the 4th century when the most relevant texts were gathered together by Constantine into the Codexes and the rest thrown out, like the Gospel of Peter and the gospel of mary Magdalene among about 50 other gospels .
The Greek scholars who wrote the gospels likely were hearing hearsay spreading around the empire. Nobody's saying they made it up wholecloth because there are too many similarities to other dying rising gods wove into the texts. perhaps they thought it was a good story.
Even the Bible doesn't mention what 9 of the apostles did after Jesus' supposed ascension or how they died. Neither does secular history mention any of the apostles.
What textual proof do you use to prove these assertions that 9 of the apostles died martyrs?
I think a God who could create a universe as big as ours doesn't even know we little microbes are here mixed in with all the trillions of planets in the hundreds of billions of galaxies out there.
For myself, I could have said
* there were no eyewitnesses to the resurrection
* there is no empty tomb
* history doesn't record a single mention of ANY of the apostles, as if they never existed
* the 4 resurrection accounts are rife with inconsistencies
* the gospels were all written in...
I agree fully, Brick. I believe the writers of Matthew were determined to prove Jesus was the Messiah even to the point of pulling whole passages out of the OT that nothing to do with the Messiah and cramming them into their gospel like trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole in order...
