A Disturbing Book in the school libary. Read by an 11 year old to the school board.

First, 11-year-olds are looking at far worse than this online every single day, unimpeded. And yet not one of these outraged parents or politicians are "shocked" by the reality of this. Nor do ANY of them intend to do anything about it.
TOTALLY!

That's why we should also have AR15's available at the school library too because they see violence online every single day!

Bringing it to the school board that makes the decisions and can stop it IS NOT THE ANSWER! The parents should just stay home and call their neighbor to really make changes.. :)

Secondly, perhaps if these parents and politicians would allocate a little bit of money to properly fund their school's library such books could have been designated off limits to the younger students and lent out by permission for the older ones.

ABSOLUTELY!
The reason we have these books is because since they didn't have enough money to designate off limits to the younger students, they decided that investing in smut books is a great alternative.

After all, it is a "school" library and these books help round off their great education ;)
Lastly, anyone with a thinking brain should have seen immediately that this is a deliberate underhanded 'stunt' to try and drum up outrage instead of seeking a solution. If they were so concerned about this 11-year-old reading this material, why are they MAKING him read it out loud, in public?
WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!

They actually gave the book to the library so that they could then check it out to bring it to the school board. They bypassed the librarian by paying off one of the employees so they could enact this amazing stunt.

YUP! Anyone with a brain, like myself, saw through this like a hot knife on butter.

PS... I slipped at $20 to the young man to make it worth while and a free vacation to the parents. I know it was underhanded of me but, you know, the solution isn't just don't have these types of books, we HAVE to be more creative..... for education sake, of course.

I never said it's being taught.

I said I was against such a thing. Hence I draw a line.

You need to pay more attention to detail.
I oppose cannibals turning maternity wards into smorgasbords, but what's the point of mentioning something that's neither relevant nor plausible?

Could be plausible. After all, nature has cannibals and vultures eat dead people. ;) :D

So, how can parents supposedly make their own choice for what's good for their kids if certain books aren't even available?

News Flash!: Republican book burning at 9!
I've always wondered what qualifies parents even to make decisions on educational content? Shouldn't maths be taught by an expert; someone more qualified than the parents? Biology? History? Social studies? Don't parents want their kids to surpass them in knowledge and wisdom?

If you shield kids from whatever makes their parents uncomfortable, you'll create copies with the same neuroses, ignorance and insularity.

Of course it's plausible. Back in 2021 a bill was signed in the past by Pritzker among other proposals elsewhere.

Again not paying attention.

All public schools here in Michigan have a "board of education" to oversee what is going on in each district, so they do have the right, whether they do that fairly or not, to set some basic guidelines. What we do not want is to have the State Board of Education to dominate all local education, so what they do is to just set some basic guidelines and then stay out of partisan politics. I know this because I've had to work with them for 36 years, and even though I did not agree with every decision, that's life in a democracy.

Most of our guidelines for each course was set by the staff, whether that be at the school or the district level, and we allowed for parental involvement but rarely ever had a problem with it. In my anthro course, I would talk and show things that would have undoubtedly got me into trouble in DeSantis' Florida as I warned my students from the get-go that they were going to hear and see things that would likely offend them because that's the nature of anthropological studies. Never once was I "called on the carpet", although once I was questioned why I spent quite a bit of time on covering the main religions plus animism. [answer: because religion is one of the "five basic institutions" all recent societies have had]

That sort of sex ed is more about recognizing inappropriate behavior than it is about the ins and outs and how-to's of sexual activity, obviously.

We've been over this so many times that a willfull reluctance to accept what sex ed actually is can be the only explanation.
And I know I've discussed this aspect of US Education history. Again, it's a willful refusal to accept the facts of what is. School has started to realize social studies are also necessary for about a century now because those "three Rs" don't prepare people to be members of a democratic society. Being a good party host and dating in high school where school topics before you were born.
Kudos to you! I listened to the father of the boy in the video, and I grant that he was compelling -- "parents know what is best for their kids," he said. But in fact, that is simply not always (or even very often) true.

Kids are going to be out in the world as they're growing. They'll see about a billion TVs, with any and all material being aired on them, including stuff that could be very confusing. There are shops on "Main Street" everywhere that cater to every facet of human interest, up to and including depravity, and what they're selling can be observed just in passing.

It is my view that professional educators really do need to teach kids how to understand what they're seeing, and hearing (in the bathroom, among a group of friends where maybe a slightly older outsider is telling "stories," and so on). And parents can contribute by simply answering their children's questions honestly and without embarassment -- but only the questions the kids ask. No need to go further, until such time as the next question comes up.

Maybe I'm too optimistic -- maybe I think that kids are smarter than a lot of us think they are, and that if they are given honest and reasonable answers to their question, they will make good decisions for themselves about what they want to do with what they've learned.

By the way, when I was in school, my school's (Pickering College, Newmarket Ontario) library had copies of I Claudius and Claudius the God by Robert Graves. They included orgies and the depravities of Claudius's wife Messalina. I handled it.

I'm shocked the kid turned down the graphic novel version. Good kid.

Why should children not be educated about the people and issues they will encounter in the world as they grow up?? Why not let then acclimate smoothly, when their minds are still pliable?
To a child, everything is new, strange and inexplicable. Sex is no more shocking than dancing, pooping no more shocking than eating, topless women no more shocking than topless men or naked dogs. It's all learned. Neurotic attitudes are taught.

The younger the child, the more matter-of-factly they'll assimilate reproductive education. Delay or eliminate early education, and it's the parents' own sexual discomfort and pruriance that will be assimilated. "Protecting" a child from sexual awareness just perpetuates parental and societal neuroses.

I think sex education should be initaited when the girls go see the "movie".

Little kids should concentrate on being little kids and learn to tie their shoelaces and cut construction paper.

I see. So you never asked your parents questions that weren't concerned with shoe laces and ice cream? Maybe you were just not very bright or inquisitive?

My experience is that little kids (and bigger kids) are learning through observation at an astonishing rate, and they need parents and teachers to provide some context for many of the things they're learning. And that context comes from answering -- honestly and without embarassment, and without going too far -- their questions.
